Great blog! I just discovered it through Dr. Susan's space. I'm busy catching up on past stories but look forward to new posts as well.

Good for you! I work for a vet that would probably have left rather than look at the cat. I'm glad to know that there are people like you out there. I'm enjoying reading your blog.

I think more people need to be made aware of programs like Care Credit, (although not everyone would qualify for approval). There are a number of emergency care assistance programs around the country (nonprofit groups who will pay towards a vet bill), but they require the bill to be paid first, and then they rule on whether to contribute afterwards. That's not going to help a lot in a real life or death emergency, or where the owner just doesn't have any money to even make a deposit on payment.

One thing I'd support would be free euthanasia services, especially at emergency clinics. I've read of situations where people with no money took injured pets (say, hit by car) to an emergency clinic, only to be turned away completely. That seems unfair to the pet if it's in pain -- I'd like the owners to have the option of having it humanely euthanized, at least. I'd even be willing to chip in $1 or $5 or whatever on my own regular vet bills to have it go into an emergency fund for those sorts of cases.

There used to be another vet blog online, but the owner took it down earlier this year. It's too bad, because she had a great entry with a few dozen replies about problems people had encountered at emergency clinics. If people can discuss the problems they've had in the past, maybe it would lead to finding some small solutions.

Don`t get me started on the pet ER topic--my list of complaints (and the stories to support them) would never end. Ultimately, it`s still a business. But there has to be some way of doing it right. In my experience, everything rests on the integrity and ability of the vet that is on duty. Sometimes it`s amazing care you get. Sometimes you`d have been better off staying home. Those odds are neither measurable of great. Care Credit is good, I`ll warrant, but anyone without a major credit card is likely not going to be approved. There`s the rub. I`ve seen it happen too often, especially in Miami where our recent immigrant population is so high. But as to euthanasia--I give it away in those situations. It costs me so little ($35 for a small dog?) and it lets me sleep a night. We need more foundations that specifically address these unworkable cases. Thanks, Leigh-Ann.

Thank you Dr. Patty for treating this kitty. We live in an area that is a little short on vet care, and have to do the best we can sometimes. My area is not a rich economic area by any means either, but a lot of people have pets and do the best they can. I know a lot of people say if you can't afford the best care, then don't have pets, but a lot of people say the same about kids. Thank you for realizing this pet owner, as well as the cat needed your help and compassion. I am sure he loved his pet very much. He could have just let it suffer or abandoned it somewhere when he heard what it would cost. You are to be commended.

Thank you Dr. K for treating this patient. Not only did you provide relief for the suffering kitty. You validated your human client's love & concern for his cat.

Your comments are offensive. I am a former vet tech and I would never work for someone like you, or recommend anyone to you.

You're right - it's not your job to judge anyone. Doctor-Ego is what you have.

Gia: Ummmm....sure, I 've been accused of that and I'll own it. But what would you have done differently? I like to stimulate discussion on this blog. If you have a specific point to make, go for it--but do it nicely...please? We all have feelings.
