Yuck... bad enough to have to open the intestines, but to have stinky oil flowing out of them...

In the Philippines, it's common to dip your dog in motor oil (not even cooking oil, but motor oil) to kill fleas. I can see the logic behind this, but it misses the fact that the dog absorbs lead and all sorts of horrible things at the same time. I have a young friend near Manila who had a cat with fleas, and the family's maid was insistent that they dip the cat in motor oil. I sent a bunch of web links saying why this was a bad idea, and then mailed them some flea collars as a compromise (there aren't too many chemical things you're allowed to send through the mail, and stores in the Philippines just don't have the variety of items we do). A few days after putting the flea collar on the cat, it got very sick, and they blamed this on the collar because it was "poison" (I have no idea if the collar was to blame or not). They still don't think of the motor oil as "poison", though. It really is hard to change cultural beliefs.

In some Cuban circles it's considered a good idea to dip your pet in Pine Sol to get rid of its mange. At least--unlike with motor oil--your pet ends up smelling clean. I know first-hand that this method kills pets--not sure if it does anything for the mange.

Sheesh. Why is it such a far fetched idea for some folks to just call a vet instead of trying crazy "home remedies" that involve completely non-animal related products??? Or... in this case at least, what about just keeping your pet from eating rugs and leashes to begin with?

LOL, the "go see a vet" redux!

Referring only to a tangent here...
Actually, the kind of questions and answers that are exchanged when people ask about pets on a routine basis tends to get on my nerves!!

There are legit, good answers and sometimes really dangerous recommendations made (and there are trolls!). Not all the self-claimed vet techs seem to have a clue. But there are some very nice experienced animal folk that try to help.

Unfortunately, the Asker of a question sometimes chooses the wrong response.

On forums where there are moderators, at least the usual rule is to remind people is to NOT practice veterinary medicine on a forum.
