Pet Patients Do post-surgical complications outweigh canine cancer cures?

I buried my dear 9 year old setter/cocker mis two years ago this week. She ultimately died from mast cell cancer. The surgery did not get it all.

Your patients are ungrateful. I would love to have my Lady back with a huge old ugly scar instead of lying in my back yard in a cold grave wrapped in a favorite aphgan.

we had a hunting dog brought in and the owner wanted the front dew claws removed because it was a hunting dog...they were floppy and should have been taken off when the puppy was a few days old. we gave our usual sermon on how the surgery can be done, but it hardly ever turns out well, dogs always lick the sutures out, there is NO EXTRA SKIN to close the incision on and on. The client wanted to go ahead, so we did the surgery. It went as we thought, dog licked out all the sutures, we were unable to close the second time, had to heal as a open wound and it left a scar. 3 years later the client's teen age son brings in another dog, very old lab that is near death son wants to find out what is wrong with dog and his grandmother is along and she says go a head and treat dog. We start with just some blood work....Heart worm positive, Lyme positive, Kidney failure. Of course the client does not want to treat so the kid brings the dog back in to be put to sleep. And of course we have not received one penny of payment for anything we've done...we send the bill with the boy, we mail a bill home, we call the home, call the wife at work, on and on. Then the client shows up one day with the original hunting dog and says that since the botched surgery 3 years ago this prize winning dog is ruined and he is now planning on filing charges with Vet Board ...however he is willing to make a deal, he will forgive the malpractice if we don't charge him for those silly little test on the dead dog. Dr. was a chicken and she caved in....still thinking about owning your own practice??? I made up surgery release forms that flat out say there is no guarantee of a favorable outcome but you are still financially responsible.

I'm with surgeon in my deams, I'd give anything to have a cured pet, a scar is nothing. Think of all those osteo dogs that give up limbs and their owners are so happy to have them gimping around on 3 paws. Those owners should be sending you belgium chocolates in the shapes of surgical instruments. Sounds like that dog is more of a status symbol then a beloved family member. Hope one of them doesn't lose a body part to cancer...might not get a ride home from the hospital.

These guys are actually very good clients and adore their dogs but they`re so cosmetically inclined that it obscures reality for them. They`re also convinced that the dog is in excruciating pain. It`s hard to explain things to people when they can`t (or won`t) see the forest...
