Seriously.

We've had two positive rabies cases in our practice this year. And I still need to get my rabies titer results! Ack!

You know, I'm just about to write a post about rabies and my hunter-cat. Never thought to get myself tested...I know a couple of people who are federally licenced wildlife rehabilitators, I'll ask if they do.
So if rabies shots aren't foolproof for humans, are they foolproof for our pets?
Found you through Leigh-Ann's blogpound BTW.

Carina: Testing of antibody levels (titers) is done after you receive the pre-exposure vaccine series--wasn't sure I made that clear. Wildlife rehabbers are on the front lines--all of these guys should strongly consider it. And in answer to your question: no. A rabies vaccine is not foolproof. In rabies-heavy parts of the country, many vets will provide your pet a post-exposure booster after receiving a bite from an unknown assailant. The idea is to help boost potentially lax antibody levels to help combat the virus. No vaccine (human or animal) conveys 100% protection from infection. Love the blogpound. Thanks for checking me out!

Thanks Patty! I'll remember this if my dogs or cat tangle with wild critters, it's happened though not recently. I didn't know that about the rabies booster...
My dogs are on the Dodds vaccine schedule and probably won't get any more vax now that they're both middle aged, I will titer. They do get the legally required 3 year rabies shots though.
Off to play agility - 200 dogs entered and yet again I have the only (long haired!) Rottweiler in any class. Hopefully today we'll do better than yesterday but we'll have fun anyhow. :)

I had to go down to the Public Health office here to have my immigration vaccinations, and I noticed rabies vaccines on the price list. Yowsa, they're expensive! If I recall correctly, one injection was about $375.
