Love the story!

Not only applicable to vet staff though. I used to date a man who (apart from the fact that he was actually an amoral, manipulative lying son of a bitch psychopath.....!! I guess its obvious the relationship did not end well?) seemed to just glide through life so much more smoothly than most of us. When I spent some time with him, I discovered why. Even though in his case it was totally fake, he automatically took a few seconds extra smiling at service people, and making some kind of personal comment to them. And in return, the service he got on that occasion was better. If it was someone like bank staff that he dealt with on an ongoing basis, they'd go out of their way to do favours for him, to make every interaction better for him.

I look at it as the best thing that he taught me, as well. Doesn't help you any to lose your temper over things that might or might not be influencable by the person you're dealing with. Might not actually get you any benefit other than a bit of good karma. But if there is something that can be prioritised or otherwise helped with, I figure it will get given to the person taking just that extra bit of time or effort to be nice.

You are so right, Dr. Khuly! We are fortunate to have several clients like the one you describe: they are thankful for every little thing you do, go out of their way to express appreciation, send cards, bring food and other little gifts (and not just around the winter holidays!). And, yes, although we try to treat all of our clients with equal attention and sensitivity, we doubtless go a little further for those who do the most to make our jobs enjoyable.
