Vet School 101 Fleas and ticks and resistance and global warming…really

I just listened to a vet radio show webcast from Australia. In it, the doctor, whose name I can not recall (sorry), talked about how he used Advantage on his dog every two weeks during some months in summer, and how this seemed to be necessary in their area. It didn't really sound like such a good idea to me, but I'm not sure how much Advantage would be too much Advantage. Don't really want to find out the hard way, either.

Of course resistance is real; anyone who would argue otherwise doesn’t know what they are talking about (or has an agenda). Like any other pesticide, topical flea & tick preventives should be rotated on a regular basis. I purchase 6 month supplies of Frontline Plus and k9 Advantix, and rotate between the two after every third treatment. Both have different, and effective, active ingredients. I had a horrible problem with ticks this spring. My vet said tick complaints have skyrocketed this year (I live in Cutler Ridge). On their recommendation I went with the Preventic collar, and after the first 5 days I’ve not pulled a tick off my dog since it’s been on her. I also used to bathe the dog before I applied the topical, which I’ve quit doing. I’ve decided on baths 4 days before or after application. So far, so good.

Haven't had to use the stuff in several years now. My dogs don't usually leave my property unless we need to see a vet for some reason. The chickens take care of anything that crawls, flys or jumps. The Gunieas take care of everything else. Including mice and small snakes. Country living!

Advantage every two weeks is one of the less savory approaches, but it sure beats flea allergies. I've heard of this but never quite got around to recommending it. Capstar every few days along with Frontline alternated with Advantage every three weeks is all it usually takes--along with environmental approches. And that's unsavory enough. Ticks? Don't get me started! I'm glad Preventic works for you, Chip. I use it and my clients love it but I've also seen dogs react poorly to it so I'm somewhat cautious.

Advantage never worked on my dogs in Portland, OR, but Frontline Plus sure does. Thanks for your devotion to this website, Dr. Khuly. This is my first time commenting, but I read your posts daily.
