This information was provided me by a source at the Veterinary News Network but I haven’t been able to independently corroborate it yet—I’ll keep you posted and give you a link ASAP. But here’s the scoop:
As if their PR problems weren’t bad enough, Menu Foods recently hired a telemarketing firm. Why? They’re systematically calling all pet owners who have made claims against them after their pets succumbed to death or illness after eating the foods they manufactured.
The phone calls are intended to urge the aggrieved parties to settle their cases. But some tainted food victims’ owners feel they’re being harassed and strong-armed to make decisions before they’ve had a chance to talk to their lawyer or victims’ rights group.
Whenever I get calls from telemarketers I hang up promptly—that’s it. No drama and no stress for either me or the person on the other line (who’s typically not at fault). But this approach still works to inform the caller that I abhor this invasive tactic—as do most of us.
So I’ve got to wonder: Doesn’t Menu Foods know that pet owners hate telemarketers, too? More still when they’re calling to get you to settle a pending legal case. It’s not only sinister and galling—it’s tacky, too.
Sure, I understand that Menu Foods needs to take positive steps to address its own survival. (And they publicly state that they do expect to survive.) But hassling the injured parties with at-home, unsolicited phone calls isn’t the smartest approach I’ve ever heard of. In fact, it may be the most brainless thing they’ve done to date.
Menu Foods needs to hire a PR team, not a telemarketing concern. If it expects to outlive this crisis, it would do well to heed my advice: Start acting like you care about the pets you’ve harmed and, for once, take some time to fret about something other than your own backside.

Where have I been? Clearly I should be reading PetConection more often.
I have no idea how Menu Foods expects to survive this. They just don't get it. I read that they've continued to lose contracts yet they've managed to secure funding to help ride this out. I guess these investors assume pet owner memories are short.

They are surviving so far because their clients have nowhere else to go. Canned food represents only a few wee percentage points of total food sold in this industry, and canned food plants are tres expensive. The only way to get full value out of them is to run them almost 24/7. This is impossible for one company, even corporate giants like Iams.
So, the canning is contracted out to other firms. Not just any firms, pet food firms, because even "human grade" pet food can't be manufactured in a facility that handles people food.
Even companies trying to get IN to the canning game have an almost impossible time trying to find someone to produce their product.
This makes it difficult, if not impossible (especially for smaller companies) to leave Menu Foods.
All that said, the industry buzz is that Menu will claim bankruptcy in the 3rd or 4th quarter this year. We'll see....

There are pet foods manufactured in human facilities regularly inspected by FDA officials. After all this Menu Foods nightmare (my dog was on Nutro Ultra) I did a tremendous amount of research and decided that Solid Gold was a good choice. Lottie wanted none of it, so my research continued. I ordered samples, literature, subscribed to WDJ, on and on. I finally settled on The Honest Kitchen. I am thrilled to have found this food. My dog is thriving, coat and health are great, I have peace of mind and her poops are small, firm and not stinky!
Anyway, it's out of CA and a bit pricey, but my dog is 7# and the food lasts quite a long time. You ca order it online or get it at private / quality pet stores that offer whole, nutritious foods.
Here is the site if anyone is interested:

Sorry- my post was confusing. Solid Gold is not 'human grade', although it's a great food. I meant to make it clear that my research lead me to find a food made of 'human grade' ingredients and that lead me to The Honest Kitchen. It is manufactured in a human food plant, along side human food that is regularly inspected by the FDA, not Solid Gold. Solid Gold is what I tried to keep my dog on while I was frantically searching......I need some sleep!

Amy: I've also heard good things about Honest Kitchen. One such recommendation was from someone who had toured their facility. I can't seem to get it in Miami, though. In the wake of the pet food recall, their name alone should bring them business. I hope producers like this get what they deserve--a bigger share of the market.

I feed Honest Kitchen and my doggies love it. I feel good about it and about the company. I have it Fed-Xed halfway across the country to here in Iowa and it is really no hassle. Check out their group on Dogster.

Yes - you can order directly from tehe website. I had to do this when I waited too long and my store was out of stock. Fed Exing it is like $10 or something. Also, they send you TONS of generous sized samples if you call them.
I order the Preference and then rotate my protein source (Bison, chicken, duck, lamb, etc.). Several people in my Chihuahua meet-up group have also switched and are having great success.
I wonder if it was the Whole Dog Journal article you read Patty? The woman who does all the food trials/reviews toured the plant and wrote an article on it right BEFORE the recall. I had to go on the WDJ site and buy the back issue. It was really interesting!

Two comments about Menu Foods:
1. Their CFO dumped over 70% of his Menu stock three weeks before the recall was announced. He later stated that this was just an unlucky coincidence. Show of hands, who believes that?
2. The complete name of the company is Menu Foods Income Fund. How many food companies are called that? From what I've been able to find out, Menu began as a managed fund for pensions and one of the investments was pet foods. In other words, they have no real connection to animal nutrition and pet care.
I have two gorgeous collies, one of whom is my service dog. I also have five cats, four sons and six hermit crabs. Do you want to know how much time I spend cooking every day since the mess with all of the pet foods? Even hermit crab food has wheat and rice gluten listed, so all of our pets get home cooking.
I love this blog. Its so hard to keep up with the latest recall news, so I really appreciate the work you put into this. Thanks!
:)

Keep right on cooking, Cindy. And thanks for the info on Menu Foods. I didn't know about either of those two bits of info.

Amy, I went to The Honest Kitchen's website and have ordered 5 different samples (4 for my dog, and 1 for my kitty). I'm excited to see how the "kids" do on this food. Thanks for sharing this info.

In 1981, ed hardy and his wife formed Hardy Marks Publications. In 2004, Christian Bale licensed the rights to produce the high-end Ed Hardy UK line, which is based on Hardy's imagery. Prior to the ed hardy clothing line, Bale was the Head Designer at Von Dutch Originals, which marketed the imagery of Kenny Howard. Don ed hardy, commented, As demand for my artwork continues to skyrocket, I felt it was ed hardy clothing time to take on a partner that could help me manage the demand and opportunities for the ed hardy T-shirts name. Iconix is at the forefront of brand management and clearly has the capabilities to dramatically grow the Ed Hardy UK business. I'm thrilled to have them as a partner. Cheap Ed Hardy are located in everywhere.
