Yay New England!

It's definitely a different way of life here. The best thing about living in Boston is that Maine/Vermont/NH are right at your door step. I can walk out my front door and be on the coast eating a real Maine lobster, in Maine, in under and hour. Stuff like that makes the winters bearable and the chilly people tolerable. :)

Welcome back!

Amy in Cambridge August 16th, 2007 09:23:00 AM

I left Miami to go to school in Boston and never looked back. I visit Florida once or twice a year to see my family and old friends but I don't think I could ever move back there. There is nothing better than walking along the Charles on a day when the temperature is 77 and the sun is setting. Nothing!

Ana August 16th, 2007 11:31:00 AM

Beautiful dog - lovely lady. I, too am seriously considering leaving Miami - and going to Salt Lake City where my daughters both now live. Yes, there's snow - but not an overwhelming amount.

Beloved Spouse is from NH, and we enjoy visiting in summer (blueberries! maple syrup! lobster! Lindt factory!). But I avoid winter, mud season and blackfly season, which leaves us a 2 month window. (I haven't been able to time the leaf-peeping season right). I tease BSpouse about getting acclimated to warmer weather, and not being able to handle New England winters!

Mr Scruffy August 16th, 2007 02:57:00 PM

Ana- totally.

How's about crossing one of the bridges at sunset (Longfellow or Mass Ave)? That's pretty sweet (up high). Or, I know! driving down Mem Drive when the apple blossoms have popped and it's a clear-blue-sky day? I was married on the Weeks Memorial Bridge, so the Charles is definitely a sweet-spot in my soul.

We are blessed, to say the least.

Amy in Cambridge August 16th, 2007 06:00:00 PM

If you love VT you need to check out Maine too. We have lakes AND the ocean to enjoy. :-)

I call hummers the "look at me!" vehicle of the moment. There is NO earthly reason to need to drive one of these beasts. The safe argument? There are plenty of other SUV options. I think it odd to drive a vehicle many other countries can't even afford to have in their own military. We are such a country of excess aren't we?

Marie August 16th, 2007 09:19:00 PM

Amy, I agree! I've spent some evenings just standing at the bridges looking at the sun set. And I've gone to the banks of the charles at 5 in the morning to see the sun rise. It's pretty cool. Another sweet spot? Have you ever gone to Larz Anderson Park in Brookline? If not, you should, it has the best views of the city from up hight, it's a really romantic place, too.

Ana August 17th, 2007 08:41:00 AM

OK Ana and Amy, now you've got me feeling all nostalgic. I attended Wellesley and took the bus in to take courses at MIT. I miss the square and TT the Bears where I saw The Pixies on my 21st birthday. I remember my first trip down the Charles, courtesy of some Harvard crew-types. And have you ever been to Wellesley? It's hands-down the most gorgeous college campus in the country (I'll challenge anyone to name another more beautiful). I visited last week and couldn't get enough of the wildflowers and the architecture. Now you've done it; I even miss the snow!

I don't plan ever to move away from New England, simply because I do watch the Weather Channel, and so understand that we have much better weather than most of the places people move to because the weather is better.:)

(Plus, I can breathe here--lower concentration of plants whose pollen I'm allergic to. But that's just a detail.)

It's nice to visit other places, but home is home. I think that's probably true for everyone.

Lis August 17th, 2007 09:34:00 AM

I agree with Lis. I grew up in Northern Ontario in a small town where my mom still lives. I've been in Toronto for six years but going home, sleeping in my old bedroom, sitting on the deck that we (my family) built when I was in highschool, even after all this time and all the places I've seen and loved, its my favorite place in the world to be and it always feel like I'm truly 'coming home'.

Marie~ I'm a "mental Mainer", in that, well I love it there. It reminds me of Northern Michigan (my home state) and I feel most at home in Maine....LOVE IT. Whenever I go back to Chicago to see my family and they ask me my favorite thing about Boston, I usually say 'Maine'! Lol.....

Ana~ I'm gonna check out Brookline, but you know - that would mean crossing the River *gasp*...lol...

Dr. Patty~ I've not been to Wellsley, but I've heard it has the highest cost of living for any college campus. Ouch! Plus, I thought you had to have proof of arrival on the Mayflower to enter the campus....I Kid!!! I Kid!!!! I'm gonna check it out. I'm an Architect, so I love to putz around and look at buildings.

Amy in Cambridge August 17th, 2007 12:46:00 PM

Amy: It;s not cheap. Luckily, it also has the biggest endowment of any college its size so its admissions are need-blind and more than 50% of students qualify for college-funded aid (so the cost is subsidized by its alums, essentially, for those who qualify). About 40% of the students are international or ethnic minorities so it's no shock they let in this Cuban-American (blonde though I may be I'm totally Hispanic). Everyone else looks like they just got off the Mayflower, though.

Dr. Patty Khuly August 17th, 2007 03:12:00 PM

Amy, I actually live in Brookline but work in Back Bay. I gotta tell you though, I LOVE Brookline, it's a really nice town, very safe, and close to everything. Dr. Patty, I think Wellsley is gorgeous, too bad I didn't go to school there.

Ana August 19th, 2007 09:58:00 PM

Ana- I love Brookline. It reminds me of Chicago....all the beautiful Post War brick buildings. We go there often.....

We are moving to Somerville, I guess I will have to change my moniker to 'Amy in Somerville' *pouting*

I own 2 Golden Retrievers of 90 and 145lbs. and will be faced with the potential to move for my employment to Belgium or France. Please forward any advice on the best way to setup travel for these 2 Golden friends.
Their size will be a problem and I realize different airlines have different rules and accomadations for pets.
Please forward any advice and/or recommendations so I can prepare accordingly if and when this move hits me.
Thank You

In 1981, ed hardy and his wife formed Hardy Marks Publications. In 2004, Christian Bale licensed the rights to produce the high-end Ed Hardy UK line, which is based on Hardy's imagery. Prior to the ed hardy clothing line, Bale was the Head Designer at Von Dutch Originals, which marketed the imagery of Kenny Howard. Don ed hardy, commented, As demand for my artwork continues to skyrocket, I felt it was ed hardy clothing time to take on a partner that could help me manage the demand and opportunities for the ed hardy T-shirts name. Iconix is at the forefront of brand management and clearly has the capabilities to dramatically grow the Ed Hardy UK business. I'm thrilled to have them as a partner.
