I agree with you, I don't know what this world is coming to.Thats heart breaking.

I didn't read the Miami article.....but I read a WSJ article on a woman in California, I assume it's the same woman/company.

I find this practice sickening. Can't take care of a dog? Try a goldfish, better yet a houseplant. Work your way up!!!! I mean, to see animals as this occasional item to take around town, completely disregards the beauty of the bond and the growth that comes from owning up to a major responsibility. In the case of the Colorado shelters that were referenced that allow No-Kill-Shelter Animals to be "checked out"- that is a great idea. These animals need to keep their socialization skills and would otherwise languish in a pen/cage.

But this operation is getting dogs from breeders as if they are providing Leader Dogs....grrrr.....This CEO is acting like she's founded "Big Brothers/Big Sisters For Dogs"! She's fooling herself! Animals are not people and to remain happy and healthy dogs need consistency in their environment and training.

Sorry if this doesn't make sense.....I'm out of my mind with frustration. What is this world coming to? *sigh*

I am sure the demand would be for young active dogs and puppies. One of my concerns, what will happen to these animals when they age and are ready to be "retired" for whatever reason?

What will be next? FlexKids - for those people who want to enjoy the love of a child, but just don't have time to commit to a child of their own.

This concept of FlexPetz is wrong in so many ways!

Their website is positively creepy. I wonder if all the "Flexpetz" are popular purebreds, or just the ones they put on their website?

I checked out their sponsored dog food of choice brand's website--struck me as a bit on the opportunist side as well. Sounds like the makers of Kumpi went to a lot of trouble to make sure 9/11 rescue dogs got their food donations (instead of going to animal shelters like the rest of the donated pet foods). Maybe it was pure altruism, but it certainly makes for a great advertisement. Their FAQ tells of arthritic dogs who eat KUMPI and no longer need Rimadyl, dogs with "corn allergies" who do fine on Kumpi (#1 ingredient is corn) because the corn is non-GMO and of "the highest quality."

Fluff that would surely appeal to the Flexpetz crowd. A match made in heaven!

It's a shame all those pet johns don't just give the (bare minimum based on 2 weekday sessions per month not including tax) $1250/year to animal charities and spend a couple days a month volunteering at shelters. Heck, BARC in Brooklyn lets you walk shelter dogs whenever you want for free!

Uuughh As a trainer I cringe at the thought of the poor dogs who don't adjust well to changing hands all the time. Sure some dogs might do alright but I think the vast majority would not be happy in that particular living situation. And with no real commitment from the "renter" who's to say they will take appropriate care of the dog?

I agree it is a sickening thought.

I'm with you... I read the profile of the San Frnacisco "franchise" and found the whole idea disturbing and was sorry to see it get a pass from various experts in the area.

Absolutely, some people don't have time for pets so they shouldn't have one. Period. But how do you explain to people that there's more to this world than them and what they "want."

Want to spend some time with a dog? Volunteer for a rescue organization!!!!

Natalie August 9th, 2007 10:56:00 AM

Natalie - I couldn't have said it better! There are lots of shelters that need volunteers to walk dogs, spend time with kitties, etc. Why not do that?

I can't say I'm suprised. There is actually a place you can rent PURSES from. These are ones that run several thousands of dollars - but for a mere $90 you can have a ridiculously priced piece of leather/plastic/fabric for a WHOLE WEEK!

2CatMom August 9th, 2007 12:19:00 PM

Oh what a nightmare. It's really no different than a foster child, bouncing from family to family. I don't know what scares me more, the people who came up with the idea or the people who will actually "rent" a pet.

Ali August 9th, 2007 09:12:00 PM

One of the worst ideas I of which I have heard. Pets need consistency ... and I can't imagine how confused they will get with inconsistent commands. Sit and Stay are easy if they have been trained, but what about the confusion of Down ... Lie Down ... Off ... etc.? Why don't these renters VOLUNTEER at their local humane society to work off their temporary pet needs and donate their rent money to the organization. Geesh!

This man maybe exploiting pets but what about the Veterinary profession who shamelessly exploit animal lovers day in day out by telling them only to feed the pet food that the Vet sells when veterinary research shows that feeding dry food in particular is causing diabetes, dilated cardiomyopathy, ibd, cystitis, struvite crystals, calcium oxalate stones, kidney failure etc. Vets leave cats with struvite crystals on dry food or change them to prescription dry food and as with my own cat can even allow it to end up dead because the Vet fails to tell the client that a cat with struvite crystals must be taken off dry food. Instead my Vet exploited me by catheterising my cat on numerous occasions and operating on him and kept him on dry food because this made my Vet far more money than telling me to take him off dry food woud have made the Vet. The result of my Vet's greed for money or lack of knowledge that dry food is the cause of struvite crystals meant my cat was euthanased when he could have been saved if the Vet had told me to take him off dry pet food since even prescription dry food is bad for cats since it still contains far too much carbohydrate for a cat and contains acidiifiers which can end up giving the cat kidney failure. I therefore cannot help but feel that what this man is doing is not really any worse than what the majority of Vets in any country in the world are doing day in day out by allowing pet owners to believe that it is alright to feed dry food or pet food to pets when in reality, as veterinary research I have shows, feeding pet food is causing serious and even fatal illness in cats and dogs.

Fiona: Choir-preaching while offering blanket condemnations of any profession (much less mine and on my blog) is just not acceptable. I'm sorry for your suffering and for what was obviously a major injury done to you and your beloved, but please do not use this forum for off-topic rants.

Yours is an old post, but there is something even "better" in Japan: cat cafes. Cafe employs a number of cats (10+) and customers go to the cafes to play with them. They pay 10-12$ per hour. I wonder why this is not triggering animal abuse case. The owner makes profit off his pets, but renting them out to other people. On flickr i see images of cats, which the photographer comments does not play with customers! Enjoy. Search for "cat cafe" and you will find more that you need.
