That is a great story and you should be commended for trying to save Buster's life. It is very hard for an owner to say goodbye to their baby but you did the best that you could to make it feel "alright" for the owner to say goodbye. That was also very kind of you to do what you did for such a small amount of money. Believe me, I know how much emergency vets can cost. We paid over $600 just to find out that Thumbs was dying and by the time we walked out without Thumbs, it was almost $1,000 in euthanasia fees and such. All the more, I still got the chance to say that I tried to do everything for Thumbs (as Buster's mom can say) and that I was there when she peacefully went on to Kitty Heaven.

You did a WONDERFUL thing for that owner. You gave her the chance to say goodbye to Buster with dignity. So, even if she doesn't see it that way right now (because she's probably distraught), KNOW that you did a great thing for her and for Buster.

I feel so sorry for vets..... I couldn't do your work. You become a vet because you love animals, but you can't treat everyone who walks thru your doors.
I spent an hour today warming up and putting a newly-hatched starling back into it's nest..because I didn't have the heart to let it die, let the dogs eat it, or put it out of it's misery. Luckily, my attempts at helping animals has been lilmited to one accident-prone pitbull. I can't imagine how hard it would be to have to turn animals away because of financial reasons.
I'm not faulting you, I want that clear. I truly feel sorry that you have to go thru this as often as you do. This is why I could never work at a humane shelter or rescue organization- I would bring them all home, and be featured on the next Animal Cops as the hoarder of the day....

what an interesting blog that you have! i'm going to add it to my favorites list. i think that all prospective vet students should read it b/c the life of a vet is not always seeing puppies & kittens for check-ups. it's sad about buster, but atleast you tired to save him.
