So what IS the major cause of scooting? Cats in particular... I have a shorthair who does it all the time... it's not worms, it's not anal glands... doesn't leave a mark or a stink trail (and yes, I do check!). I thought maybe she just had an itchy bum. Why not? ;O)

You got it! Itchy/ouchy bum is the most common cause! Question is: Is it due to anal gland-area allergy or is the pressure in the anal glands building uncomfortably? Do some cats and dogs do this to relieve the pressure or to itch at a mild rash in the area--which in turn leads to pressure building under the swollen skin over the anal glands?

It's a question for the ages, I'm afraid. There's no easy answer--even when the pet is right in front of you...

But worms? That's not been shown to be the case as in human pinworm anal itching. Can tapeworms cause itching? Most don't find tapeworms to be itchy or uncomfortable, in my experience.
