I couldn't agree more. One of your best articles, Dr. Patty.

I have mixed feelings on the use of pharmaceuticals for behavior issues.

First, I'd like to say I'm a big fan of Dr. N. Dodman, and highly respect his work. (ironically) I subscribed to Tufts "Your Dog" for years, and appreciated his contributions. His work is important, not only to provide treatment protocols for affected pets (spinners, tail chasers, OCD's) but to also research cause/genetics.

My reservations come in, when prescriptions may be given without the benefit of complete health workup: source of pain, vision or hearing difficulties, brain tumors, etc. or even something as simple as rare or known side effects of current medications.

Over the years, I've witnessed some bizarre behaviors and phobias in my own pets and rescues. Some clearly (after a time/diagnosed) physically oriented, some modified with retraining, some just plain unexplainable but liveable (harmless).

There is a definite need for so-called "psychiatric meds" , but fear it may rise to a level of unwarranted use.

"The New York Times Magazine can do better than this. Next time they want to write an in-depth piece on pets they should look beyond the generics of a Popular Science writer to the maturing field of pet journalism. After all, veterinary medicine and pet care is no longer the bastion of crazy-cat-lady columnists this article would have you infer comprises the norm. "

Hear!Hear! I hope you sent a copy of this to the editor of the magaizine and the author of the articla.

Well said. This is such a hack piece, beneath the NYTimes. I agree with your response completely.

It's not in the Pharmaceutical topic, but on 'humanization'....you know, one thing I always say to people that make fun of dog owners that "pamper" their dogs is "maybe they are just compensating for all the puppy mills, dog fighters, and people that dump their animals or harm animals".
