CAUTION! This post contains nasty photographs and discusses pus in detail.
I confess. I love feline abscesses. Ever since I was a little girl working in a veterinary hospital setting (apparently before child labor laws were strictly enforced), I’ve adored a good cat bite abscess.
Though these usually superficial wounds may seem frustrating and scary to you (and rightfully so), to me they’re an excellent reminder of why I love veterinary medicine.

Simple feline abscesses secondary to cat bites (most all the abscesses I see in cats) can produce horribly high fevers, terrific malaise and putrid, stinking wounds that scream for medical attention…yet they’re almost invariably fixable. Like any self-respecting vet, I love a case I know I can heal.
With my affinity for these cases as backdrop, let me now proceed to inform you of the important behind-the-curtain issues every cat owner should know about cat bite abscesses:
The pattern
Despite their varied appearance, cat bite abscesses almost always follow the same pattern:
1-Simple puncture wound visible (days 1-2)
2-Swelling around the area (days 2-5)
3-Lifting of the underlying tissues and abscess formation with hair loss around the wound (pus accumulation in pockets these layers create starts on day 1 but progresses rapidly—or not—depending on the location and type of bacteria involved).
The source
The majority of puncture wounds and abscesses in cats are caused by other cats. Stepping on a nail, being punctured by a fence, or sustaining a non-feline, wildlife-related bite (such as from an opossum or raccoon) are just not common scenarios for these wounds.
Despite the insistence of my clients otherwise (“I know it was that pesky fox!”), most of these wounds are stereotypically feline in appearance.
Location location location
Cat bite wounds are almost always sustained when cats face off or when they run. Consequently, puncture wounds and their resulting abscesses are typically found on the face, shoulders and forelimbs or on the tail, rump and backside.
Timing of treatment
Most bite wounds can be treated before they become major abscesses if (and that’s a big if) the wound is discovered before it’s allowed to progress. Because punctures don’t bleed copiously, nor do they always make themselves known (through limping or obvious swelling, for example), full-blown abscess formation is the typical scenario for these wounds.
Antibiotic therapy is a must in these cases, though some wounds, treated early, will be amenable to hot-packing or Epsom salt soaking (I make a simple Epsom salt solution with comfortably hot water and apply a clean washcloth soaked in the solution to the wound twice daily for 5 minutes).
The biggie
Some abscesses (most it, seems) arrive in a full-blown state of oozing nastiness. Others in this category have already seen large chunks of skin melt away. These wounds almost always need some surgical management. The kitties are anesthetized. The wound is trimmed of its dead flesh (debrided), the infection is rinsed out with copious quantities of disinfectant-tinged water, big holes are sewn up and drains are placed. (The pic below is not my case. I place drains differently.)

Principles of treatment
There are as many ways to treat an abscess as there are vets but the principles are always the same:
1-Antibiotics,
2-culturing the wound(s),
3-draining and cleansing (apologies for the pic),

4-debridement and drain placement (if big pockets are present),
5-fluids for feverish cats and…of course...
6-pain relief.
Following up
Here’s where I always discuss a cat’s lifestyle, especially if cat bite abscesses are a chronic problem. Neutering is basic, of course, as toms and queens (intact boy and girl kitties) are more likely to get bitten. Then there’s the whole outdoor thing: How about an enclosure?
And finally, there’s the issue of disease transmission. All cats with bites need to be up to date on their vaccines (a three-year protocol is great as long as the appropriate vaccine preparations are elected). Rabies, feline leukemia and FIV (feline AIDS) are the biggies. But there’s no great vaccine for FIV. And the FeLV (feline leukemia) vaccine is only about 70% effective.
Some vets will follow any bite from an unknown source with a rabies vaccine (this practice often depends on how endemic rabies is to your area). Most will discuss follow-up testing for FeLV and FIV in six weeks to be sure transmission has not taken place.
Cat bite abscesses may be common but they can be killers. Never try and treat even a simple one on your own unless you have LOTS of experience and follow ALL the above principles.

Cat abcesses are gross. One of my vet's techs likes them as she likes pushing all the junk out of them. Blah!
The last cat abcess I had to deal with- The cat's owners couldn't understand why their cat's right back leg was huge compared to his left one, so my boss and I spent a Sunday morning looking for the cause. Upon shaving the cat's leg we found a bite of unknown origin and the stuff that came out of that leg stunk ( stank?) like raw chicken that had been left out in the sun to rot for about a week. The smell was bad enough, but the volume of junk that came out was massive. The only "funny"part about it was that once the leg was drained, the poor cat did have a serious chicken leg thing going on, only the skin was saggy.
The cat ended up having a drain put in place and was fine about a week or so later, but it was a experience that I'll never forget. It was that day that if I saw or see a cat abcess ever again it would be too soon.

My cat had one of these last year. We live on a property and she enjoys going out and playing in the tall grass. She obviously got bitten by one of the cats and developed an abscess. It didn't appear too large at first glance, her appetite and energy seemed okay, so we let it ride a few days to see if it would resolve naturally (intermittent licking notwithstanding). It did not.
When we took her to the vet, our vet took a closer look and astounded us when she revealed that the underlying abscess was much bigger than what was strictly visible. She debrided our cat's wound (showing us the true extent - awful!), admitted her for one night's stay, and cleaned and stitched everything up and Miss Tiddy was home with us the next day with her Elizabethan collar. She made a full recovery.
We've since learned to be more vigilant about abscesses for appearances can be deceiving.

Yuck, I've had to seek veterinary care for two of these---one with my cat and one with my dog---both caused by serious bite wounds inflicted by different rescue Scots (anyone know what their teeth & jaws look like? HUGE!)
Neither had drains or stitches, and that was when we were given a "101 on bite wounds". Always keep it open with warm, wet washcloth packs daily to let it heal from the bottom up (prevent it from closing) Clavamox, if needed for bad infected looking ones.
I think about this particular vet often, he was a great one.

I love cat abscesses for the simple fact that it gives some owners the motivation to start keeping their cats indoors only, or at least outdoors w/an enclosure, due to the typically higher-than-what-they'd expect bill for proper treatment as you outlined above. Keeping your kitty inside is free!

Lots of stories, unfortunately. Current cat had one at the base of his tail, which I had to syringe through twice a day with salty water. Had to put him in the bath first. Not much fun. Many others besides, including forelegs which never came up as abscesses, but did swell up - cellulitis I think the vets called it - and he was very lame for a few days.
Previous cat was aging and unwell and confined indoors, as much as he disliked it. He started acting cranky and swiped a paw at everyone. Two days later an abscess showed up on his head. Must have been his brother, although we didnt see the altercation occur and they were usually ok together.
His brother got a swelling on his jaw, and I expected the worst - was an abscess from a cooked bone he had eaten, not from a bite. Learnt the hard way on that one.
Current cat looks for fights, so is confined indoors, but has to be medicated, and walked on a lead, to even remotely accept it. Otherwise he stresses out, sprays, wanders aimlessly, refuses to settle, tires himself out and sleeps for hours before starting again. Attacks me and the dog too. And miaows every hour all night. I could not live with that.
Tried Feliway, making the indoors more friendly, cat mint scattered around, toys, scratching posts, three litter trays, more interaction, views to outdoors, outdoor enclosure. He is FIV from his fights, so has to stay in - no option. It is costing me a small fortune - medication, feliway, and the outlay for the enclosures.
Before saying "just keep him indoors", its not that easy with some cats. They rebel, in ugly ways.

My bad boy Poe....he is the only basement cat. He liked to bite the other cats in the butt or the tail. The butt you could notice right away, but he bit one of my other cat in the tail and we didn't notice until the wound exploded all over my daughter's bed. a little cipro, betadine cleanings and two weeks later she was recovered abet with a naked tail.
This is when Poe it was decided would have to live separate. He has redirected aggression issues that he came with, but has been on his own as the #1 wash and stray mouse supervisor and he is slowly becoming better behaved, though sometimes for no reason at all, he'll still run by and bite you on the leg.
I must admit, the wounds are impressive. Except for komodo dragons, IS there a bite worse than a cat bite??
LorriM September 14th, 2008 10:02:00 PM
LorriM: Yes. Human bites. They're nasty, bacterially speaking, I'm told--not to mention the problem of disease transmission if the bitee is another human.

Sorry, this isn't actually related to your post above (I'm a multi dog owner but no cats). I saw this article in my local paper regarding veterinary malpractice. http://www.ajc.com/services/content/metro/atlanta/... Was curious to hear your take on the subject?
Aubrey September 15th, 2008 10:19:00 AM

While my views are a bit more nuanced than this article might suggest, I believe vets need to be held accountable for their misdeeds. The problem is that the reverse is not true: It's hard to hold owners responsible for their role in a medical calamity. And people who care not a bit for their pets should not be allowed to receive damages for emotional distress, etc.
Off topic, you guys, sorry...
Dr. Patty Khuly September 15th, 2008 11:20:00 AM
Human bites....didn't think of those. I imagine that breaking the skin causes much more tissue trauma as well in a human bite leading to muscle breakdown and even a more "congenial" bacteria home since human teeth are not naturally designed for puncture/piercing wounds.
Yuck....I think I'd rather the cat bites me thanks....
LorriM September 15th, 2008 06:35:00 PM
I've only had two experiences with pet-related abscesses. One was a hamster, and I do believe you would have been impressed by the amount of goo in that rodent of unusual size(nearly a pound's worth! Of hamster, not pus...) But he was such a better patient than my (also over-sized) spoiled brat cat.
Giz is a large, indoor-only, gray 'ditchtiger'. And he's got quite the Alpha Male cat Attitude. So apparently one night, something got into our (sadly) fenced-in back yard. Even though Giz had never been out there, it was still HIS property, so he forced the sliding glass door open and went out to lay the smack-down on the unsuspecting trespasser. Or at least this is what my hubby claims, as I was dead to the world back in the bedroom(work week). The next day I noticed some blood on the couch, freaked accordingly, and was then enlightened by my hubby. Who apparently didn't feel that MY cat getting out and getting into a fight was important enough to wake or message me...
I gave Giz a full-body check-up. Didn't see any open wounds, but felt a lumpy, warm area on his flank that reminded me of the hamster's issues. Wrestled him into his carrier and rushed him off to the vet. Due to the late hour, his regular vet wasn't in, but we were seen by the owner of the practice. I thought this was a good thing until I was told that there was nothing wrong with my cat. Any lumps I felt were old scar tissue that had been there for YEARS! Now I'd had him for about 11 years at that point. He was dumped at my doorstep at 4 weeks of age and had been my 'baby' ever since. I know every freckle, hangnail and split end on that cat! But I obviously wasn't aware of these lumps. Oh yes, I was offended, and couldn't even get a second opinion since he was the Big Cheese. So you know what happens next. The wounds ballooned within a day or two and then spewed a 'lovely' pink Pepto-Bismol of Death substance...
We rushed him back in for the standard treatment, and to my surprise, his regular vet insisted that Giz had tangled with a raccoon. She had seen a number of similar injuries on cats that weren't so lucky(but their owners had positively id'd raccoons.) And we had raccoons in the area, including a gang of younger 'bandits' that had taken to terrorizing and killing the free-roaming cats(of which, unfortunately, there were a lot). And we weren't living out in the country, or even in the suburbs. And I think the frequent visits to the vet for those few weeks are what finally drove him over the edge. He never liked going to the vet, but now, we pretty much have to blindfold him and straight- jacket him into the carrier...

I'm dealing with a cat abscess right now. I came home from a week's vacation a month ago and found my 16-year-old cat hiding in the basement. When I pulled her out of the hiding spot I saw she had a big abscess on her chest with an oozing wound above it. (My cat sitter failed to notice anything wrong.) Since this cat is a 3-year thyroid cancer survivor I thought the worst but it turned out to be a bacterial infection. My vet didn't know what the cause of the wound could be...I do have another cat--the 15-year-old daughter of this one (both spayed) and they do swipe at each other sometimes but the vet didn't suggest it was a fight wound. So that's puzzling. The cat has been on antibiotics for nearly a month now and I have to get her abscess drained every few days. At first we were going every other day because it filled up so fast. After a couple of weeks the oozing wound is gone and her fur started growing back, but the darn abscess keeps coming back. The vet is loathe to do surgery because the cat's so old, but the abscess isn't getting any better. Over the past week I've been bringing the cat in for draining less frequently --every 3 to 5 days--but as of today the vet said that I should consider bringing her in every day or every other day, so that it might have a similar effect to the surgery. Or else go ahead and risk surgery. Basically, the vet said, either the abscess or the surgery can kill her. AAAGH! I don't know what to do except try bringing her in every day and see if it starts getting better. And then try the surgery if that fails. Poor little kitty is such a good sport about all of this but I hate subjecting her to all this medical treatment.
Kathleen O October 13th, 2008 04:44:00 PM
Our Kitty had what I thought to be a sore eye a couple of days ago. We also noticed some horrible "gunk" on top of his head, which we assumed came from the eye when he was wiping/cleaning it. This morning, his eye looked a lot worse so I took him to the vet. Turns out the "gunk" is from an oozing abscess obviously received during a cat fight, together with the infected eye. The vet shaved the top of his head and squeezed out the awful stuff from the abscess, cleaning it with watered-down iodine. He then applied undiluted iodine to the wound. I had to do the same thing tonight myself, as well as encouraging more of the gunk to come out - gross. Poor Kit is obviously hurting a lot when the iodine is applied. I must do this for the next few days and hopefully he'll recover fully. I've owned cats most of my life (both indoor and now sadly outdoor only as I have developed an allergy to them), and I've never known one to suffer from an abscess. Hope it gets better quickly..
Noreen October 15th, 2008 04:42:00 PM
I am so confused about how to treat my cat. Please help!
The vet says she has an abscess on her forearm. I've started oral antibiotics today. The vet wants to do surgery with anesthesia, total cost $1000. That's $1000 in addition to what I paid for today's visit & antibiotics. My cat is my baby so I'll pull out the credit card if need be. But seriously, is that a reasonable price? And is putting her under really necessary? Anesthesia seems risky for a procedure that sounds so simple. I hate seeing her uncomfortable. I want to do the right thing and I don't want to get ripped off.
amy c October 17th, 2008 04:20:00 AM
Amy C: My cat developed an ugly abscess on his cheek, and it was big. When I took him to the vet, I was told the same thing. Luckily, I met a different vet via an aquaintence that told me that was completely unnecessary for my cats particular case.
I would get antibiotics for her, and put a hot compress on the abscess a few times a day. It should pop open. Clean it out and keep it clean and open. Cats heal fast, so if you get it clean and keep it clean, it should heal nicely.
With that said, don't let it get out of hand. Sometimes, the wound will need to be lanced. If it gets bigger, it could be a real huge problem, be more expensive, and cause issues. So, just monitor it, and be smart about it.
I would definitely try the hot compress and cleaning it first, though.

I FOUND AN EGG SIZE MASS ON THE BACK OF MY CAT, POOPERBUTTS TODAY. IT WAS VERY PAINFUL FOR HER TO THE TOUCH, SHE EVEN TRIED BITING ME! I FREAKED OUT AND CALLED A COUPLE VETS BUT THEY WERE CLOSED BECAUSE ITS A SATURDAY. THEY TOLD ME TO SEE THEM ON MONDAY AND I COULDNT WAIT THAT LONG. POOR THING WAS IN SUCH PAIN. I GOT IN CONTACT WITH A VET ON THE PHONE WHO SAID I SHOULD TRY TO SQUEEZE THE PUSS OUT IF I COULD AND PUT WARM WATER WASH ON IT. IT WAS SO PAINFUL FOR HER AND NEED I SAY, PUTRID AND DISGUSTING ODORS WERE SPEWING OUT ALL OVER THE PLACE. I COULD HARDLY KEEP FROM VOMITING!!!!! I FEEL SO BAD THAT SHE IS IN SUCH PAIN, AND IT SEEMS TO KEEP DRAINING ON ITS OWN, BUT THE SMELL!!!! I PUT TRIPLE ANTIBIOTIC OINTMENT ON IT TO KEEP OUT INFECTION, I HOPE THAT IS OK. CAN ANYONE GIVE ME ADVISE AS TO WHETHER OR NOT THAT IS A GOOD IDEA? OR IF NOT, WHAT SHOULD I DISINFECT IT WITH THAT WOULD BE PAINLESS FOR HER. IT BREAKS MY HEART WHEN SHE CRIES OUT IN SUCH PAIN!!!!! HELP!!!!!
annette December 6th, 2008 04:19:32 PM
My cats Abcess popped and I thought okay no problem I keep it clean all will be well. Unfortunely my spoiled baby had his own ideas of how to take care of it and I couldn't keep him from licking and tearing it bigger he is now at the vets where he will spend the weekend and get stiches. Total cost $297 dollars a bit cheaper but I could have saved him some pain if I'd taken him in when I first noticed it.

My cat just had a abcess that opened today!! I had no idea that anything like that could happen from a cat fight!!! It totally freaked me out. I could see all her insides!!! I really hope she does not have to have stitches. That would cost a arm and a leg.But i'll do it if i have to.

My cat Mr. Miyagi had abcess surgery yesterday. While I was at work today he pulled out his drain. It's Saturday and my vet will not be back until Monday. Will he be alright until monday?

My cat Isis, got bit dec 30. So i took her to the vet the next day where they told me she had abscess. I was like okay, put the drain in her since i knew about this from my aunt's cat when she had it. Now it been three weeks, her drain is out she isnt oozing as much. But she doesnt have the stitches yet cause there is still that fat tissue there, but the holes from the drain is getting larger and the skin is coming off.I keep goin the vet where they now told that if this still is goin on that i should let them do surgery and keep her so they that can control the infection better. But I'm only 19, still in school and can't afford 2,000 dollars for it (they have to put her under each time to flush it).I accidentally brushed across her and the skin broke so now there are 3 holes. I don't know what to do! I'm keepin the holes clean and the pink fleshy colour coming back, giving her medicines but the size of the holes is what bothering me and this surgery thing

Withing the past couple of years, two of my cats had very nasty (bite?) abscesses at different times. One had an abscess on his chest and the other cat got one on her back. I took both cats to the vet, and each time, my vet told me that the abscess did not need any kind of treatment and it would heal on its own. In both cases this was true. I have to wonder if some of the vets are being overly cautious or opportunistic?

my kitten was just attacked by a full grown cat & im really worried about the wound because he wont let me look at it but there is a somewhat decent amount of blood (the only way i cant tell of that is he has a pure white coat) i dont want to cause him any pain but i want to make sure he is ok. what should i do?

I noticed a large bump on my behind....he was feverish, and very sick!!! I took him in.. cost me 500 dollars to get it cut opened, cleaned, and a tube put in and stiched up! He came home and was back to normal... for about 2 days... then he got worste gain.. this time.. I seen no bumps, just that he stopped eating and drinking, didn't really move. He would sleep for 12 hours at a time.. and only get up to move to a different spot! I picked him up to give him his antibiotics and he just gushed with fluid!! I thought he had a stomach ache from the med's and got sick on me. The next morning he had a hole the size of a baseball or more in his back. You could see flesh over his hole back!! So back to the vet we went!! We ended up with two new tubes (this abscess was all around his body) and about 40 stiches! brought our frankinstine home.. and he was again.. back to normal.. for another two days!! Then back to the no eating, drinking, sleeping.. only now he is peeing all over the place (He had NEVER done that before) biting and hissing (when he has the energy!) So now 2 surgeries, 3 tubes.. he has ANOTHER hole in him!!!!!!!! I don't know what to do.. I am at my wits end.. they said it cant be FIV or FeLV because his previous wounds are healing way to quickly.. and if had had that.. they would not!!! Our cat means the world to myself, my two children and my husband! I don't know what to do.. they keep telling me its rare and they have NO clue on what is going on!! How can someone not know!!! and when is it going to stop!!!! Any advise? Anyone ever heard of this before????? We have almost covered his body with pockets.... so now what???

Wow! What a horrific story about your poor little cat! I am hoping that since it is now the end of May, he is doing fine?!? One thing I have learned in the Animal Care world is that there is a time when "enough is enough" for our poor best friends. How many holes does your kitty have to deal with and how much pain does he have to endure? Sometimes the hardest decisions for us to make as their caretakers is the best decision for our best pal. (I know....just the thought of euthenasia breaks my heart!) However, it's the quality of life you have to look at. If the vet has no idea what is happening and why....with no idea what the underlying cause is so it can be treated.....plus, your cat keeps getting more and each one is so painful........ more often then not letting them go is the best medicine FOR THEM. (Not us.... We have to think of the animal.)

Hey guys, i noticed my cat had a massive swelling on her face, and was very tierd and could hardly eat,
i was extremly worried for the few days before i had started doing my own investigating,
i had been on the internet browsing for what it might be for hours, and finally i saw a picture of what looked exactly the same as pumpkin's and was like ooooo my god, its an abcess! so i bought her inside last night, and she was fine, tucked up all warm in my bed.. i went to work at 10 o clock that evening, but came home at 12 to check if she was alright and eating and drinking, the abcess had popped, it must of been because of the heat of my bedroom. so i let her outside while i cleaned up the mess and so she could stretch her legs and go toilet. is the best way to look after her wound is to use salt water? apparently its like an anticeptic?
she seems alot better, the only problem is i have no money till this friday, and cant take her to the vet till this date. x
