Pet Patients Homer the “eyeless wonder-cat” hits home again…this time in a book

Homer was a couple of weeks old when I found him…maybe 21 days at the most. A young couple brought him in after finding him—I can’t remember where.

His eyes were swollen shut. I recall the presence of maggots. Though the couple requested he be euthanized on account of his certain blindness and disgusting appearance...I couldn’t do it.

How can I describe my feelings at the time?...

I was a young, idealistic veterinarian. I saw a patient I could help with a simple, pain-relieving procedure. And, of course, I saw great things in Homer's eyeless future.

I knew that a cat who had never achieved vision would never miss the sensory experience of sight. Why couldn’t he be given a chance to live a "normal" life on his own unusual terms?

That’s when I surgically removed what was left of his tiny eyes and hoped for the best.

Homer survived. He thrived. And he eventually remained with a family friend. one Gwen Cooper. Later, he moved from Miami to New York with her.

Here he is for those of you who doubt his ability to live a normal kitty life:

This was ten years ago. And now Random House has agreed to publish Homer’s fantastic story, courtesy of Ms. Cooper. The feline version of Homer’s “odyssey” will finally be available in print—though not for a year or so yet.

It’s curious how teensy the animal writing world can be. When Gwen called me from New York to tell me of Homer’s literary success I was thrilled, of course. How could I not harbor an indelible mushy spot for this cat…despite not having laid eyes on him for all these years?

Not only is Homer an inspirational example of what anyone can accomplish when given the chance to survive—not to mention a loving home. It’s also an example of how one seemingly eccentric decision ten years ago can motivate so many to see life differently.

Homer’s “odyssey” will doubtless mean different things to different people—and that’s one reason why his story deserves to be told. But for me, Homer will always be an intensely personal reminder of what veterinary medicine can pull off when it’s infused with the idealism of youth. He’ll always remind me that there’s nothing a partnership between a veterinarian, a loving owner and one fighting patient can’t achieve. It's a story for all of us to live by.

I have two blind cats. One born that way, he has never been able to see and you'd never know he was blind. He maneuvers throughout the house, going upstairs, to the litterboxes and finding his food and water without any special accommodations. My other blind cat, has been that way for the last year. From a retinal problem. WHen she first came here, she must have had limited sight, because she she started falling off the bed, walking into doors, and obvious other maladies, she went to off the the vet. She can get around OKAY....it is taking her much more time to relearn as the case might be. She also tends to grab you wit her claws right now, but she's slowly getting better. Will she get as good as my other cat, I don't know, but she's making progress and still finds food, water and litterbox okay...blind cats really don't appear to be terribly handicapped, but just need a little more patience.

It would be nice of there was a website for blind cat owners. I read at the absolutewrite forums about a person who rescued a kitten that was in a similar situation -- and it might have helped to know more about the options. peop,le will still say that not euthanising a bling cat is 'cruel'. p.s. I hope you got a name check in the book?

Nice Homer story. I like it....I have a small cat that was a bottle baby. She has lots of immune issues and is only 4 lbs. that would be 4lbs of teeth and nails if you are to clean her face, her ears, her nose, clip her nails of heaven forbid try and do something with her teeth (okay granted that causes her pain because she has stomachtitis)
About two months ago, I was clipping the nails on my 20 lb large orange baby cat Lobster. When you cut Lobby's nails, he sounds like you're killing him. Even though his nails have been cut since he was a wee kitten, I've never cut a quick and I just tip them. He's just a big baby. Well Fuzzilla though he was hurting me and hurdled her 4 lb body upon his 20lb to defend me. She is still hissing at him periodically just to warn him off.
People don't realize that cats can be very protective and can indeed inflict worse wounds then dogs sometimes. I felt quite privileged that Fuzzilla would attempt to defend me even if it was just from a cat complaining I was cutting his nails. (like I could ever get a dremel even in the same room with him)

Man, I love stories like this. Good for you for electing to provide (by the sound of this and many of your other posts) a decent amount of pro bono services. The referral center I work at as a vet tech does a surprising amount of charity work, the generosity of our surgeons has amazed me (I had previously worked for a penny-pinching vet that did ZERO charity work, besides maybe looking the other way when a tech would slip a patient a necessary service the client couldn't afford, like pain medication). I've made a promise to myself that once I graduate vet school I'll remember both these situations when I'm given the choice to help someone or not.
Seriously, such a heartwarming story. On a totally different note, eye enucleations are one of the few procedures that make me rather squeamish. I know my patients aren't painful because we use blocks, morphine-lidocaine-ketamine drips, pre, intra- and post op pain control, etc., but it just makes me hurt to see the optic nerve cut and all that.

Dr. K, this story made me cry and feel pride simultaneously. Three people did a real nice thing. It has a lot of meaning to me, a lot. It was suggested to me that my Pocket, born looking like a lifeless frog, would live a horrible life and short one at that. It was suggested that I euthanize her. She didn't, she lived a GREAT life and she was loved and cherished.

Seriously, that is AWESOME that Homer's story will be told! So many people believe - for a variety of reasons - that it's kinder to kill an animal rather than let it live with a "handicap". Whether that be loss of an eye, or a limb or what have you. Maybe Homer can help change their minds!

My vet had a one-eyed cat for many, many years that she got because his former owners requested that she euthanize him (an otherwise young, healthy and very sweet boy) rather than "disfigure" him by removing his injured eye. Fortunately they were willing to agree to let her keep him instead. She told me that she remembers that the former owner's two young children were with her when she brought the cat in. What a chilling lesson for those kids to learn from their heartless mom!

I found out how well cats can manage without sight when my old girl (who was about 20 years old at the time) went blind. It was probably a gradual loss of sight, but she coped so well that I didn't even realize she was blind until one evening she was in my lap and turned her face up to me. The lamp was shining full on her face but her pupils didn't react to the light at all. But she had jumped up into my lap without help, and was able to jump on and off the sofa and find her way to her litterbox and food bowl just fine. Which, to be honest, was about all the activity she had been doing when she could see anyway! :-)

I can't wait for Homer's book to come out. My husband and I have many cats, most of which come from a feral community he feeds where he used to work. About 8 years ago, he bought home 3 little kittens, two were brothers, and the third was a female from a different litter. We started noticing something different about her right from the start. The boys were about 4 weeks old and she was about 3 weeks, so I fed her with an eyedropper for a few days and then started her on watered down food. When I put the dish down, she would walk right through it. She would also just walk right off the bed, like she didn't even see the end of it. We had a feeling she was blind because her pupils were permanently dialated. We took her to the vet and he confirmed it. She had congenital retinal dysplasia. Her retinas were not attached, she was born blind. She was a tiny little gray kitty and never got much bigger than 4-5 pounds. she had short little legs and a short tail, and the sweetest little face. We called her Luvey because that is what she was, a little love. I cried when I heard she was blind, but then I realized, it didn't bother her at all. She used to run around and chase her two "brothers". We put throw pillows around the hard corners of the furniture because she would run into them when she played, but when she was just walking around the house, she managed very well, as long as we didn't move things around, or leave a chair away from the table. We would bring her outside in our fenced in yard and she would even chase the birds. She could hear and smell extremely well. Outside, she could run around in the yard without bumping into things. She really enjoyed her life and to anyone who would even suggest that a blind cat should be put down, I would say why? There is no reason to. She amazed me everyday with the things that she would do and the places I would find her. She was just the sweetest little cat in the whole world. Sadly, this past spring, after being sick for a few months, Luvey died of kidney failure. I think it was the saddest day of my life. My husband and I have had a lot of cats, and have mourned their passing, but something about Luvey was so different. I just miss her so much, I miss her cuddling, and that sweet little face when she would rub it against mine when I picked her up. As soon as you touched her, she would start to purr. She just lived to be held and loved and we did a lot of that. She sleep every night nuzzled up against my husband's neck, purring herself to sleep. I would give anything to have my little Luvey back.

Being the sucker for the "handicapped" that I am, today I brought home yet another foster. Brought to our shelter as a stray on Tuesday, she was flea-infested she had trauma to her left eye, we're guessing as a result of being struck or kicked. She has a lot of swelling, a possible small orbital fracture, and a hyphema to that eye. About half of the anterior chamber was blood-filled, but she had not had a globe rupture. The eye is now sutured shut, but she may lose most or all of the vision in that eye. But she is now with me for a few weeks for rest, antibiotics, and steroids until we see how much healing takes place; if she re-bleeds or blocks off the chamber entirely, she may lose the eye completely. Hopefully, she will heal and be placed up for adoption an a few weeks, as she seems not in the least inconvenienced by the lack of the vision in that eye. In fact, keeping her at rest will be a challenge; she's not too fond of crate rest at present, but is too active if unconfined.

My 16 year old cat, Lyle, just went blind last week. I called the vet who told me that her high metabolism or overactive thyroid could have caused this problem. She knows her way around our house and is able to find water and food. Unfortunately, I think she may be struggling with finding the litter box. We have three boxes in the mud room off of the kitchen and we have a fourth in the downstairs bathroom (primarily for her since she seemed to be using the bath mat as a little box). However, I heard her tinkling in the dining room this weekend. Since we work all day, I've placed her in the downstairs bath with foot, water and a comfy bed I just bought her, but I'm wondering if there is a different approach I could take to help her find her way to the litter box.If anyone has any suggestions for how I can ensure she finds her littler box, I would appreciate it. More advanced behavioral problems, such as chewing, biting, aggression, digging, jumping, etc. are covered. We all love dogs training .
