I have no doubt that pharmaceuticals are appropriate in some cases of behavior issues in canines. My greatest concern, however, is ruling out every possibilty of a disease process or possibilty of pain.

If I had a nickel for every time I noted a behavior change, far in advance of the obvious symptom, I'd certainly have a few bucks. Owners, including myself, cannot always describe well enough or perhaps it is so vague and intermittent---that a typical exam may not reveal a cause.

And then there are the "mental wrecks" , that no drug is going to undo in a magic instant---for the pets that may have been abused or neglected.

My concern stems from the many stories I've been told regarding hasty euthanasias in a breed (Sealyham) that can manifest pain in unpleasant ways, much to the more typical Scottie "Die-hard" breed that will almost never exhibit pain overtly.

I wonder if humans are really being watched over as closely as one would be lead to believe. I know you mentioned bipolar, but what's up with the numbers of kids that are on medication of ADD or ADHD? Some of these kids are as young as 3 and they are being given drugs for their "hyperactivity". Isn't being curious and on the move all the time just part of being a toddler?

My fear is that vet medicine will turn into the new big pill pushing fad. Yes there are cases when meds are necessary, but seeing how there are now doggies weightloss pills, I have my doubts. Vets are people and lots of people think pills are a cure for everything...

This comment is directed at you specifically Dr. Patty. I was talking about vet medicine in general.

That last sentence should say "wasn't" directed at you, instead of is.

Without clonicalm, my cat would have been put to sleep. It saved my sanity, and let me get some sleep. But I am hoping he can be weaned off it over time, now he has learnt to tolerate being an indoor cat (long story) and developed new routines and habits. That is how I see some of these drugs - helpful but for the short term only.

On the other hand, my dog was put on a drug for collapsing trachea, which seemed harmless at the time, but long term use almost led to him being put down when he developed nervous symptoms and was terrified of everything. Took some diagnosing too, since I did not suspect a medication he had been on for four years, but luckily a vet finally did.

My girl Zoe developed some separation anxiety (as well as an irritating, but heartbreaking, thunderstorm phobia)...clomipramine was prescribed but has been unnecessary as she's doing well with behavior modification, even if it takes longer. I was surprised. Reconcile's "BOND" training program is actually pretty effective, at least w/mine, but it does take effort on my part.
