If you read Dolittler relatively regularly, you’ll know I post in defense of pit bulls as pets. As an ex-pittie owner, I feel strongly about breed specific legislation (such as the banning of pit bulls from many municipalities across the US).
In practice, it’s a fear-based, discriminatory policy where justice is too often meted out unfairly. It condemns dogs almost exclusively on the basis of their owners’ sins.
Case in point: Vick’s dogs, now living successful, non-violent lives ensconced in loving homes, even serving as therapy pets.
This kind of legislation drives pit bull owners underground so that they often eschew both medical care and needed social interaction for fear of being separated from their pets. Moreover, these laws have never been shown to effectively counteract dog-related violence. Instead, they serve the role of providing pulpits for legislative backers seeking popular support through fear.
Sarah Palin’s comment last week at the Republican National Convention (in which she likened Alaskan hockey moms to lipsticked pit bulls) was hailed by supporters who admired her pluck. Yet pit bull advocates immediately recognized the insensitivity of the remark for the way in which it reinforces the stereotype of pit bulls as toughs.
I thought the quip was not too inappropriate—in fact I thought it kind of funny, in spite of myself—but to me it also recalled her general insensitivity to animal life (which I blogged about last Friday). If I hadn’t been aware of her stance on animal welfare I might have given it more of a pass.
Still, I couldn’t help bringing you the image above, one which perfectly describes how I feel after digesting Governor Palin’s pit bull comment.
Now that’s a far more appropriate interpretation of a pit bull with lipstick!

I didn't take Sarah Palins comment offensively, as I think she meant nothing bad by it. It was a joke. I grew up with Doberman Pinschers which are always portrayed as snarling junk yard dogs when in fact they are the sweetest, smartest, and most loyal dogs around. Seems no one much takes up for the Dobie. I don't like hunting and I don't eat meat, but I would like my country to be run by someone with experience, and that's John McCain. Obama wants to raise taxes and increase the size of the government and I just can't afford his hair brain schemes. I think America will regret it if they elect him. After four years we'll be begging for anyone to take over. IF YOU DON"T LIKE HUNTING STOP EATING MEAT. I think it's hypocritical to hate hunting and be a carnivore. Cows and pigs suffer at meat farms, too.

Typical Republican boilerplate with not a shred of evidence, Kelly. Let's take a look at what the country can't afford, more wars for the taxpayers to pay for. More Republicans running up the country's deficit to skyrocketing heights, attacking soveriegn countries and selling America to China. Oh and by the way policing morality while they're at it, women's reproductive rights, gay rights and abstinence only education so the country can end up with millions of poverty-stricken teenage mothers.
Oh and the experience argument is laughable since McCain chose about the least qualified running mate on the planet.
PS. Dr. Khuly has written about sourcing environmentally responsible and sustainable humanely raise meat sources. Presumeably most people reading the blog at least have pets that do eat meat

"Hair brain scheme!!" What witty political rhetoric. Eating meat is beside the point. This woman shoots wolves from a helicopter and calls it fun. She has a 4 month old baby who needs to attach to her. She has a 16 year old pregnant daughter. I'm sorry, but if she is as good at vice presidenting as she is at parenting we are in for some kind of hot, wet ghetto fun. Mc Cain cheated on his first wife to get a rich trophy chick. WTF does not begin to describe the moral and ethical low that this team represents. Obama is a good man- that gets him my vote.

As a pit parent, I cringe when I hear people throw out the pit bull stereotype. I'm sure Sarah Palin didn't mean to malign the breed, but I'm equally sure she hasn't met a lot of pits in her day. They *are* physically tough and very strong, but also extremely loving, affectional, and loyal.
Sarah September 9th, 2008 12:13:00 PM
Being a fan of pit bulls and Sarah Palin, I personally think the pit bull comparison was quite apt: A strong, tough breed that is loyal, loving, and affectionate. I "still" wear my son at almost nine months of age and oh my, he's a nursing baby too. Whether Gov Palin should be vice president or not is a matter for the voting public to decide in November. What I've seen of her family and what I've seen of pit bulls is similar. My favorite pit, Beauty looked like a public menace but was the sweetest, most affectionate, loving dog I have ever been blessed to be around.

I don't think it is hypocritcal to hate trophy hunting of wolves from helicopters and be a carnivore. I don't even see the connection.

Killing helpless is KILLING HELPLESS ANIMALS, no matter how you look at it. And the animals are frightened in every circumstance, whether it be from a helicopter, hunting, or killing them in slaughter houses. I personally see no difference. I have a problem with those professing to love animals, while they're eating them for supper. Eating meat for food is totally unnecessary. It is merely a habit, a custom of American society. And, I might add, an unhealthy one.
At least Palin tells it as she sees it, and I admire her for that. Those barbarians that won't admit it are delusional.

Thank you, Esmee, you have opened up my eyes. You are right-war is expensive and we should totally not fight with anyone ever. The terrorists saved us a LOT of money when they flew planes into buildings and killed so many people. Less people=less spending. Who needed those planes and buildings, anyway, right? And it's true women should absolutely snub morality and get pregnant any old time she wants, just to get an abortion. Why use birth control or get sterilized when you can go to the clinic after that one night stand? Silly me. I was so wrong. Obama getting his current job without being voted in and only having it for about 6 months is all the experience needed to run this country. I was thinking someone with experience was the ticket-how could I be so naive? Obama does great things like talk and get felons to help him buy houses. That's great that he believes in EVERYONE! Hopefully he will win and completely rid this nation of its military. That way we can welcome any ideas people might have as far as removing pesky high rise buildings and things like that. I am now a democratic supporter! YAY democrats!
By the way-my dog eats vegetarian dog food and loves it.
Kelly September 9th, 2008 03:41:00 PM
I found the comment thoroughly annoying. Whether she meant ill by it, who knows. Did she even write the joke herself? But the media sure seized on it, which was thoroughly predictable, and they're sure not using it to show her as loyal and loving.
katie September 9th, 2008 07:23:00 PM
Calm down, people! You're responses are a bit aggressive, sort of like pit bulls on amphetamines! (ha ha, that was a joke). Well at least I'm on topic. What IS the pet-relevant experience of the current president and VP candidates? Anyone??

You know what they call a mother that teaches abstinence? Grandma.

According to news reports, the teleprompter was malfunctioning during Sarah Palin's speech. The teleprompter continued to scroll during the applause breaks. Her pit bull comment was off-the-cuff and probably an attempt to cover the problems. I thought she did an admirable job with her speech.
I am a long-time vegetarian and have worked for many years with wildlife & domestic animal rescues. Sarah Palin's life could not be more different from mine, however I applaud her strong convictions. I have been saddened by the outpouring of bile and the personal attacks against Sarah Palin and her family. Plus the number of intentional false rumors circulated. If you do not agree with her political beliefs, that is fine and debate on the issues is welcome. The democratic response to Sarah Palin's nomination reminds me of a group of scared children. From the latest poll figures showing that John McCain is equal to or pulling ahead of Barak Obama, I believe the democratic attempt to vilify Sarah Palin has had the opposite response of what they hoped for.
Susan G. September 10th, 2008 10:59:00 AM
Stings doesn't it Susan? Kind of the GOP campaign saying "Barack is a Muslim terrorist" smear? Do you find that appalling too or is it just the Palin stuff that bugs you?
Bottom line: Palin had to hire a town administrator to manage a town of 6,000 people (that's 53 employees!!) at the tax payers expense! She put her teeny-tiny outpost of a town $20 million in debt!!!! Considering George W. has bankrupted this country, continues to bail out corporations and forgein nations (at OUR expense) but can't manage to safely bring our troops home or help his own countrymen when they need leadership (i.e. 9/11 or Katrina or take-your-pick), the last thing we need is a continuation of this false-conservative leadership. I'm an independent, NOT an Obama sycophant, and I can see this twisted brand of conservative leadership has to stop now. McCain is a sell-out to the Rove spin cycle.
Sorry to be so off-topic....but people can't keep putting this phony outrage front and center.
Creature of Habit September 10th, 2008 12:26:00 PM
Here's an article that sticks to the sickening "issues". You can not call yourself a conservative if you support this kind of spending:

Creature of Habit September 10th, 2008 12:35:00 PM
Creature of Habit - I am so not a shill for Sarah Palin or the GOP. I can admire the person without agreeing with their message. I have been a registered independent for many years. I was just as upset by the personal attacks on Obama. My comment was that I am tired of the mud-slinging by everyone - right & left! It is no wonder that the best and brightest in our county do not seem to gravitate toward politics. Who wants to get involved now if it means being subject to a figurative anal probe? I admire all the people willing to put themselves into the political arena.
You know nothing about me or my views or who I plan to vote for, yet you felt you could comment about my "phony outrage." This type of attack was just what I had commented about. I remember from my debate class in high school that personal attacks are not useful and just weaken the speakers position.

Okeedokee folks, time to turn down the volume by a few decibels. This post was not neither meant to pick political sides or provide a forum for you to lambast one another. I know it's hard with this kind of election (any election, really, but this one's especially touchy, I think) but we all need to remember that on Dolittler it's about the animals--whom we can all agree we adore, despite our differences of opinion on how their welfare is best managed. So let's stay on-topic and not bash each others' heads in, OK?
