This cat is an only cat and has been nearly litter-perfect, except for a few minor cases of kicking litter out of the tray.   I keep it simple.  I don't know how often others change all of the litter, but I'm not noticing odors myself with the current methods.

Can't stand the detergent smell of the scented or "multicat" versions MYSELF. so I can't imagine how that might offend a creature who lives by smell.   So, I go for the basics, using what I read on a British cat rescue site.  Plain open plastic tray, with newspapers laid out around it.   Clumping, unscented litter.  There are three or four copies of the same plastic tray.  Scoop every morning & take out to the trash.   This is an opportunity to check that kitty "input/output" systems are performing normally.  Once a week, take a clean tray and fill with new litter and lay new papers.  Jettison the contents of previous tray and the old papers.  Wipe out the tray, spray with a solution of 1/3 chlorine bleach, let dry in the sun.  Add to the stack of clean spare trays after it's dry.

We lost one of our cats last year to FIP and I did a lot of research on how to limit the risk of infection for the others. Minimise your cat's exposure to FCoV by good litter tray hygiene is one step and the researcher found that certain litter is better than other ! We switched our cats cold turkey to the new litter (seehttp://www.catvirus.com/ for details) and also desinfect the box every 1-2 weeks with a complete exchange of the sand. So far we are happy to report no other cat got sick.

Is that you in the size matters pic Dr. Khuly?  I'm happy to see a less controversial topic today!

Please. I beg of you. Don't use the phrase "suck it up" in a paragraph about cleaning the box.

We have very good luck with a standard well-known brand of clumping litter. I tried the special "small spaces" scent, but it smelled worse than the odors we were trying to conceal, so we were back to the regular variety.

The box is one of the big high-sided ones with a tall lid. We never actually used the lid, but that was the only kind we could find that had the magic combination of tall sides with a low entry. My cat is elderly and has some trouble climbing, so the low entryway is a must.

I made my own cat litter box cabinet using some directions from Ikea Hacker. It's made from an Ikea kitchen cabinet and is big enough to house my kitty's litterbox and food. There's a kitty-sized door cut into the back so that he can get in and out, but the dogs can't. It works really well!

Tara M. March 22nd, 2009 05:57:45 PM

Mine is similar to this one:

http://ikeahacker.blogspot.com/2007/12/kickass-litterbox-cabinet.html

I used the same cabinet, but with a different top. I needed a top that wa ssturdy enough to hold a heavy fish tank, so using Ikea shelves wouldn't work.

I have two cats and three boxes. I've expermented a bit with litters over the years, and I've found that if given time to adjust, the only thing my cats won't use is Yesterday's News. So I go for what I find easiest to keep clean--which used to be the clumping litters, and is now the crystal litter.

When I try a new litter, and especially a new type of litter, I do one box first, one of the two boxes that are closest to each other, and I only switch completely when I see that they are regularly using the box with the new litter.

Lis March 22nd, 2009 06:15:37 PM

Keep the box scooped, tidy, and CLEAN.

Evet March 22nd, 2009 07:47:08 PM

Good advice. From the behavioral perspective I find the following to be the most common reasons for litterbox avoidance:

  • Improper or accidental learning:

unsuitable learning or other conditions at a young age

  • Undesirable litter/box: texture or related challenges
  • Cleanliness issue: irregular cleaning or inappropriate

    cleaning solutions

  • Physical limitations: age related challenges
  • Health problems: veterinary medical problems surfacing
  • Side effects due to medication: side effects
  • Territorial behavior triggered by internal stimuli

(within the household): new critters or changes

  • Territorial behavior triggered by outside stimuli:

    invaders or intruders

  • Emotional or isolation related: stress related
  • Dietary changes or other nutritional concerns:

    dietary changes or complications

  • New home or related change: stress or other triggers

These points are from my discussion of litterbox avoidance problems at Ark Animals and I produced a litterbox avoidance booklet to help people learn how to deal with the continuing problems  that some cat owners encounter...best to keep those kitties in the home!

I feel pretty lucky. I have five cats who all share one box, which takes up most of the floor space in one of our two tiny closets. Granted, it's a large, open box w/high sides (about 26" x 17") and holds close to 40 lbs. of FreshStep litter (my personal fave after having tried about a dozen brands). It's scooped at least once daily, and luckily my kiddos seem to do fine sharing. My previous residence was a little larger, so we had two large boxes between four cats, and that worked well, too.

anna March 22nd, 2009 07:51:59 PM

I have 6 cats and all are great except for one. I have 6 boxes total and use clay litter and clean it out every day and replace totally once a week. The one that sprays/pees outside the box has his own box in his own room. But he still will be naughty. His is behavior. I have tried everything (different litter, medicine, etc.) and nothing works. So now he stays in his room when no one is home and when we are home he can come out and be with the family. But we have to keep a very close watch on him. I love him so I can't put him down or send him off. He is about 15 years old and I will do the best I can for him. Does anyone know of a fool proof method of eliminating cat urine odors permanently?

Elizabeth March 22nd, 2009 08:27:33 PM

I have two cats, but only one has a problem. She uses the litter boxes (I have four) to urinate, thank goodness, but will not use them for defecation. I put puppy pads (!) on the carpet in the places she uses most frequently (there are about five and, sad to say, three are in the living room). She will use them more often than not, but sometimes still refuses to do so. I have tried everything with her. She came to me from Animal Rescue seven years ago with IBS. We have battled that problem off and on, but my vet finally got her stabilized and healthy almost all the time. She is an adorable and loving animal. I use a lot of carpet cleaner and a huge supply of the puppy pads. Because I took her in to give her a permanent home, I will continue to do so. If anyone has any help with her particular proclivity, I'd welcome your advice. Please feel free to email me at deedotcom2004@yahoo.com. Thanks.

I live in a "cozy" 384sqft apartment with two young male cats (6 and 9 mos).  Due to space, I opted for the king-sized closet box option, like Anna.  I used one of those plastic bins intended for under the bed storage.  It takes up just about the entire floor space in my hall closet, and the boys do very well with it - except when the younger of the two fails to squat properly and goes over the side.

I've also kept the kitten tray I purchased when the older of them was first adopted at 14 weeks.  That one fits next to my toilet, and despite its teensy size, they still like to use it now and then.  As for substrate, I went with PeaPod.  It's a natural plant material that clumps and has a very mild minty smell.

These boxes get scooped between one and three times a day.  I neglected to adhere to a weekly box wash schedule (though I DO a full wash and dry occasionally), but I like to think my strict scooping regimen helps balance that, especially since it's a clumping litter - no wet nuggets left behind, and fresh litter is added to make up for the volume loss.

Stephanie March 22nd, 2009 09:57:15 PM

Clumping litter only at my place. I prefer unscented but, every time I find one, the manufacturer adds scented crap and a "new, improved" label to the (now) stinky version.  I'm with the cats.  I prefer litter in the litter!  I have found that popping the top off and setting it on the porch to air out before use helps some with the scents.  (I had one years ago that was newspaper only AND didn't want it shredded.)

Three cats, four boxes, two locations.  Two boxes with covers, two without; all with high profile sides.  The two with tops are because one of my cats sneaks up from the back or side and swats Princess kitty  from over the top EVERY time he can!  Boxes get cleaned with bleach or Pine Sol and water, last round is half hour soak in a tub of hot water and half cup of bleach before air drying on the patio.  Miss the original Febreze which was all natural and no scent.  Was excellent for spritzing the sides between washings of boxes but the new version doesn't work for that.

Have yet to find a properly sized litter box!  Tend to use the RubberMaid type BUT hate that they have a channel around the bottom.  If I had any idea how to get a product to market, I'd give a litter box product a try.  Bet I'm not the only one who has designed a better litter box out of desperation and wished custom plastic manufacturing was available like on demand printing.

Elizabeth, odor removal depends on a number of factors.  What are you trying to remove the scent from?  (Carpet over pad over wood subfloor is the most difficult in my opinion and it starts with pulling up the carpet and pad dousing the subfloor, letting it dry, and then several coats of Kilz Original.  I also advocate a solid coat(s) of Kilz for baseboards and at least 18" up walls and either caulk or a paint seal between the baseboards/trim and walls as well as along the base of walls to keep urine from getting behind baseboards/into walls/framing.)

PJBoosinger March 22nd, 2009 09:59:55 PM

Ah, my favorite topic....and also the one that most people ask me the most about because they "know" I have a lot of cats..

first let me say that you can NEVER have enough litterboxes. I have solved many problems by placing litterboxes in many corners.

IF you are managing many cats, those litterboxes can't be confined to the basement, laundry room or bathroom and not invite trouble. At least 5 of the cats I have were dumped due to elimination issues.

So here's my 2 cents...two litterboxes in every room and two litterboxes for every cat. Without exception. Many cats do not like to pee and poop in the same box. So place those boxes in proximity of one another.

Do not buy whatever litter the grocery store has on sale. Pick one and stick with it. personally I use feline pine.

If you are managing many cats, you need to have many flavors of litterboxes...covered...uncovered...high sided, high sided with low entrance way for the elderly cats to get into easily. Hidey hole type litterboxes for those who are shy and don't like anyone watching (I like a large rubbermade tub for this style, I cut a hole in the lid and leave the lid on)

keep em scooped....we scoop once a day here, some of the more favorite litterboxes get scooped twice a day. All boxes get dumped and bleached every other day.

we keep a shopvac near a long stretch of boxes we have together to quick vaccum pellets that get kicked out (they hurt like a <b>itch if you step on them in bare feet.)

a little sprinkle of baking soda is okay, but nothing scented....and I just prefer to scoop or dump to any additives.

about every 6-9 months we will retire an older box that won't completely scrub clean anymore, or the plastic has a lot of claw marks in it, and am generally rotating a box in or out every month.

My favorite box (not to say my cats necessarily, they all prefer a different one) is http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2755434

but they make one with the plastic already scented...and again, I'd stay away from that one.

You especially do not want your cat startled while pottying, so make sure your choice is sturdy....tip proof...many elimination problems can have roots in avoidance due to "something bad" happening at the litterbox...it tipping over, another cat...whatever.

One cat?..Iwouldn't know what to do...maybe try and teach it to use the toilet....http://www.karawynn.net/mishacat/toilet.html

Now, I will say that one one male that sometimes gets crystals if he sneaks the dog food, will pee in the bathtub so I know he's peeing blood and it's time for some methigel and a closer watch on the dog food, but not all cats are so helpful, so if someone is peeing outside the box...best to get a UA done...to make sure there is no underlying medical issue. I prefer the cystocentisis method of urine collection as cross contamination is much less likely at least in my house. The trick there is just to place the cat in the carrier about 45 minutes before the vet visit so they can't use the litterbox.

LorriM March 22nd, 2009 10:29:29 PM

I have three cats and four litter boxes. I used to have them scattered throughout the house, but now keep them all in the spare bedroom, with two next to each other and the other two well separated. Two litter boxes have Feling Fresh Scoopable, which is a pine litter made from ground pellets, and the other two have Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract clay litter.

Before we added the third kitty I was using pelletted pine litter, which the girls were fine with, but the third cat is extremely fussy about litter. I tried a variety of different options and we still had a bad inappropriate peeing problem. Since we added the Dr. Elseys boxes we haven't had a single incident - I'm quite amazed.

One litter box has a hood, one is in a large cardboard box and the other two have high sides but no lids. They get scooped once a day.

My cat's story... I "inherited" my cat when he was 7-years-old. I'd known him since he was a kitten. My roommate fostered a litter of motherless kittens, and kept one...him. An indoor-only cat, he did fine as the single love of his "mommy's" life. When she went away to a different university, he allegedly developed behaviour problems (scratching). The new roommate demanded he be declawed. His "mommy" acquiesced. Still, he reportedly developed behaviour issues...housesoiling. Over the course of a few years, a dog was added to the mix, then another, then another cat. His behaviour worsened to the point his "mommy" put him on some medication (can't recall which). Still, the housesoiling continued. I received a call one day. My old roommate reminded me of my pledge to take the cat should anything happen to her. She pleaded that if I didn't take him, she'd have to kill him. (I don't like the word 'euthanize' for anything other than medical necessity.) Naturally, I agreed to come get him. Bringing him home, with his medication, I called to confirm he could be taken off 'cold turkey'. With that, he hopped out of his carrier, into my livingroom, and has been essentially the perfect cat since. That was 12 years ago. He's 19 now and doesn't look a day over 1. He grooms himself to near-perfection. He has not soiled outside his litterbox (although I do keep it scrupulously clean, and I know his former owner...well...let's just say she didn't). He free-feeds yet keeps an ideal weight. He's fine on his own, but lets me know when he wants my attention. He has no behaviour problems whatsoever. He's a really easy keeper. He is great with dogs, too! My dog views him as her superior. That's the same cat who, in his former home, had behaviour issues so bad, he was going to be killed. His housesoiling was so bad, the final straw apparently was when he jumped up on the sofa and defecated right beside his former owner. Why, exactly, he had all those issues with her, but not with me, is unclear. But he has been nothing short of perfect since the second he walked into my home. Oh, and, by the way, I use a covered litter box and I change litter brands all the time, for various reasons. Also, I use the litter box filling method based on my days as a vet. tech. I use a newspaper liner, with just a few small scoops covering that. Then, I clean out everything at least once a day, or whenever I notice the box is soiled. As such, I don't use clumping, since it wouldn't work properly. It would be silly to clean out a traditional-filled litter box completely, every day, as that would waste an awful lot of litter. But the way I do it, my cat has a really clean litter box most of the time, and a completely fresh litter box at least once a day, without wasting too much litter. As an added benefit, it doesn't smell at all, even up close.

Marjorie March 22nd, 2009 11:49:21 PM

Someone want to tell my cat that using the litter tray is a good idea? And waking me at 4 am to be allowed outside to toilet is not? :-). Yeah, he will use the litter tray if he must, but resents it.

He has three to choose from, filled with recycled newspaper pellets.

One problem is solids - he wants to dig a deep hole, and standadrd litter trays don't allow that. Also the size of the tray - he hangs over the side to pee instead of standing in the litter.

Instead, my front yard is a cat toilet.

Robin March 23rd, 2009 12:08:22 AM

Robin, No can do until YOU do the telling instead of him :)  Dogs need alphas and cats need Queens.

PJBoosinger March 23rd, 2009 02:02:22 AM

I know all this to be true... which is why it baffles me how we've got away with two cats using the same (admittedly huge) box when one had been used to using it alone for several months,  with scoops every day or so and a full change once a week. And we've changed litter three times! They just don't seem to mind and we've had zero accidents. They might be two of the most easy-going cats in the world, - they even shared food bowls from the moment we introduced the second cat with not even a mew of complaint -  and we're very well aware just how lucky we are!

I'll be forwarding this link to cat-owning friends with troubles.

Alex March 23rd, 2009 06:21:58 AM

My cats came from a shelter that used scented nonclumping litter. Yep scented. So I've stuck with the same brand but use the clumping version. And the good news is that they didn't do a great job on box cleaning, so...

One medium size box for 2 cats (I have a very small apartment). The box is quite deep so they can dig away and it has a clear top which seems to be OK with them. One cat will sometimes jump in when I take the top off to clean it which is ideal - he has more room, and I can have an immediately clean box.

I clean it a minimum of 3 times a day (before I leave for work, when I get home, before bedtime). I use the method shown on this wonderful video from Dr. Lisa Pierson's video: http://www.catinfo.org/Litter%20Box%20movie%201min%2056sec.WMV I also use a Litter Lifter to get EVERY LAST piece of clump out. http://www.magic-scoop.com/Site/Litter-Lifter%C2%AE_Magic-Scoop%E2%84%A2.html.

And yes, I only change the whole box over every 4-6 weeks. And no, there is NO smell at all...ever!

2CatMom March 23rd, 2009 09:54:11 AM

Wouldn't it be great to be as nonchalant about life as cats are?

Evet March 23rd, 2009 10:15:49 AM

I admit I've done the bad thing-- buying litter that's on sale.  My cats really don't care about scent, unless it's obnoxiously strong.  But I do. And one of mine rolls in the litter box.  She's so weird.  So we've gone back to unscented litter, so she doesn't smell like kitty litter perfume 24/7.  There are really only about 3 brands that actually are unscented.  I've used a couple that the label said it was unscented, but it sure smelled like perfume to me.  Mine are more concerned with cleanliness of the box than scent.  I have tried a few litter "systems" and different kinds of litter.  But always come back to unscented scooping litter-- that's what they like best.

Raven's Mom March 23rd, 2009 01:42:07 PM

Lori - Love where you're going, but I think I DO have the perfect answer.

Normally I'm open to almost any solution, and yes, mine is not a one size fits all answer (to those of you in apartments, take heed to the king-sized closet box - this is the right track.

Lori's got the right litter though.  We use Feline Fresh, which is a clumping version of Feline Pine.  It's biodegradable, all natural, flushable, naturally scented, absorbs odours better than ANYTHING I've used before and the cats take well to the texture (I've had a few clients refuse it, but we simply switch to the pelleted/non clumping version and things are fine).

So, start with the right litter and then... skip the box.  That's right... SKIP THE BOX.  Me, I have two cats at the moment, and no cat box.  Instead, I have two kiddie pools from the local superstore grocery I picked up at an end of season sale for $7 a piece two years ago.  They do NOT require fastidious cleaning, however they DO require a LARGE amount of litter to fill at first.

For example, the Feline Fresh bags are about 34lbs, which is the equivalent size wise to about 50lbs of clay litter.  It takes about 4 1/2 bags to fill a box, so it took nine bags the first fill (at about $30 a bag).  However, I only buy a bag to refill about every eight weeks or so, so the cost is negligable.  Especially when you take into consideration the fact that I really don't have to fret if I let a few days go by between cleanings.  Plus, if you're short on cash or forget to pick up a bag, being a bag short is not going to put much of a dent in the pools.  ;O)

I make sure the pools are only ever 1/3 of the way filled, so that I can clean them as necessary.  This is why we have two.  You don't have to keep two filled, but we keep them in our unfinished basement, and figured, "Why not?"  Simply dump all the litter in one, clean the empty one, dry it WELL, trade, clean the other one, even them out.  Or in the case of one empty one, fill the empty one, clean it well, dry it, and place it underneath the full one for storage.  Did I mention that's the other wonderful thing about Pine litter - it weighs next to nothing!

Our final tip is to keep a square bucket/bin/container with a lid beside the pools.  I use the largest scoop I can find, with the longest handle possible (big box or co-op stores have the best finds, or small stores can sometimes special order).  Biodegradable paper bag goes in container, poops/clumps get scooped into bag, when bag is full it goes into the green bin (our city has a compost program).  The lid controls the odour.  I prefer to dispose of it this way rather than flushing - but I have flushed it, and it is safe for drainage - although I feel the environmental impact is less when it's allowed to compost.

And that's it in a nutshell!  You could have two cats, you could have 22!  With about 56 square feet of litter area between the two, there's plenty of room for everyone!  Plus, the high sides avoid the ol' feet in the box, bum over the floor trouble.  (you know what I mean.....)

Great post, Dr K!

Kim March 23rd, 2009 07:15:00 PM

We have 5 indoor only cats and 2 large litter boxes. Never had a problem and feel very frotunate! Scoop every day and change once a week. Never changed the brand though, don't want to push my luck! What great ideas on here! Love the ikea hacker ideas!

Faith March 23rd, 2009 07:58:21 PM

By the good graces of my very understanding cats we're back down to 2 boxes in my apartment.  I have two litter mates and after a lengthy, unavoidable business trip one got stressed and started using the sofa and my bed.  On the one hand, it's nice to be so missed, but on the other hand it was quite stressful and I was really sleep deprived.  It was, in part, because she had also hurt herself (excessively groomed/chewed) but it was also stress.  So after getting her to the vet post haste I ended up with 3 boxes, 2 cats, and a very small apartment.

I put that clear plastic carpet protector upside down (pokey side up) on the sofa for about a month and kept the bedroom door closed whenever I was gone, also for about a month.  I also used feliway for a while and "lined" my sofa cushions under the slip cover with an extra long shower curtain liner (oddly perfect fit).  After about 3 months I managed to remove one of the boxes, the one in my bedroom thank goodness, leaving them with one good sized covered box, a boodah dome, and one jumbo sized open box (one kitty is quite leggy and large - http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751239).  And all was good until stupid human went and screwed things up.

I swapped the location of the boxes so the covered box was in the more public area.  Stupid, stupid human.  Poo under my bed.  Unhappy kitties.  Stupid human.  It took an hour of human and cats sitting by the big litter box (now back where it belonged) with the repentent human scratching tummies and heads and cooing at them.  The more finiky of the two, finally satisfied with my apology, hopped into the box, pooped, and went on her way.

Otherwise, as long as I don't screw things up, they are fine with Feline Pine and two boxes.  I prefer Feline Pine because it flushes well (the poops get flushed as soon as they are 'deposited') and doesn't track too badly.  I really like the nice big box too, both cats are diggers and the high sides help keep most of the litter in the box.

Anne March 23rd, 2009 09:04:09 PM

Kim,

I hear you and believe me I have thought about the kiddie pools MANY times. now, I have no place for those round ones, except you know..maybe under the piano....(hum.....)

could we get about 4 in rectangular shape to go please....

Zelda now has her own room due to litter box problems, and we have no carpet anywhere in the house!  She hates other cats and when the neighbor got one that was allowed outside, she started spraying on and around the front door!  So - changes in litter box habits can be due to something happening outside the house.

Finally got her using the box.  Has to be a large rubbermaid with a hole cut in the long side and no lid.  She always poops in the box, but tends to pee AT the box!  So - i use puppy pads around the box to catch it.  Not the prettiest solution, but it beats ruining the floor.  type of litter seems to not be an issue, i am now using the crystals to cut down on the tracking - she kicks the other stuff everywhere.

teri March 24th, 2009 07:44:50 AM

I love the kiddie pool idea - one problem - two of them would be as big as my whole apartment, LOL!

2CatMom March 24th, 2009 09:34:33 AM

7 cats, 4 - 34 gallon rubbermaid tubs sans lids, 3 extra giant high sided hooded litter boxes, Dr. Elsey's Cat Attract litter.

I have a few cats that seem to prefer using the hooded boxes so I can't totally eliminate them but wish I could. A couple cats like to pee like marking by standing on their tip toes and peeing as high as their butt will reach, the tubs contain the pee inside the box, other types of litter pans do not.

The tubs are so much easier to clean also and more spacious for the kitties.

I have my boxes sort of grouped in pairs. Two in the dining room (yes right next to the table!), two near the front door (we don't use it often), two in my bedroom, and one in the spare bedroom (both bedrooms are upstairs). I have at least one cat (possibly two) marking around the house randomly, may be twice in a day, may go a month before it happens. I can't have a bathroom rug anymore even if it's down for 20 minutes it gets nailed.

In the kitties defense, I have one with a high urinary Ph who has to be on Methioform twice a day, currently have one getting antibiotics for a UTI, and one is a Megacolon cat who sometimes has accidents (the poop is much easier to clean up though).

I never had problems with urinating in the house even when I had 8 cats, and only 5 all hooded litterboxes. That all changed when the oldest female got very ill and had to be separated from the others for some peace before she passed. After that I had more fights and the urinating started.

cl March 24th, 2009 08:42:43 PM

I highly recommend Dr. Elsey`s products.  They also make a cat attract additive that you can sprinkle into your regular litter - to further avoid upsetting kittie`s delicate feng shui balance.  ;O)

cl: It`s incredible how the dynamics of a home can change litter box behaviours.  I`ve had fellow rescuers with dozens of cats in the house and no issues, until one cat came along who upset the applecart - and all hell broke loose.  Months of seperation and re-training later and even after removing the offender you may still be dealing with the aftermath.  Losing the matriarch or patriarch of the household can have the same effect.  Sorry to hear about the loss of your kitty.  :O(

Kim March 24th, 2009 11:08:13 PM

Thanks so much for this post.  My male kitty has a proclivity for furniture.  Every time I think we've broken him of the habit, we catch him squatting again - so very nasty!  At first, we thought he was marking territory because our house was on the market (parade of strangers invading his space) and because the vet ruled out a urinary tract issue.  Then, we moved, he stopped marking, several months passed, kitty seemed happy, and out of the blue he urinated on my bed.  This time, the vet determined he had a urinary tract infection and suggested the addition of extra litter boxes, just in case.  So far, so good.  After the meds and new litter box options, he seems to be doing well.  But, I'm going to bookmark this post - just in case...

ok really need advice... I have three cats two males ( really good ) and a female. I have had the female for 7 years and for that long I have had litter issues, but not bad. I have always lived in apartments, the first one with her she shared with a farrette and was fine little to no accidents. the second place I got one boy and I cant remember any accidents at all, had the litter box in the laundry room. the third place I had all three and had the litter box in the laundry room as well but I went through three boxes, the first box was automatic and the kitten broke it by jumping in and out of the box all the time, and the others didnt help. the female started peeing on clothing piles clear or dirty. now I have been in the same apartment for 2 year and this whole time I have had issues with her peeing infront of the litterbox, on clothing and now on beds. I have no idea what her issue is, I am buying a brandnew home and dont want these issues in the new place. what do I do? I have read about having more then one box per cat, tried it, they wouldnt use it. and moving it and keeping it clean, it doesnt matter I keep it clean and it will still happen. she even doesnt like steping on the edge of the box she always jumps out. I just dont know what to do anymore for her. help please. email me: missybirt@yahoo.com

My cat has a terrible problem. I have two cats, and one cat has developed a couple of horrible problems. I got the same litter as always, but I neglected to notice it was a different scent. Now my cat eats the fresh litter. Why??? I will be sure to get some different litter tomorrow. Also, he sleeps in the litter box. I am apparently a bad kitty mommy because I have an enclosed litter box with a little door, which they don't seem to mind, but one likes it too much for his own good. He has a couple of other boxes to sleep in, which are around the same size as the litter box. One has a pillow in it and one doesn't, so he can lay on a cool surface if he's hot. I really don't know what to do.

My 10 yr. old orange tabby (Tiggs) occasionally poops on the couch out in the sunroom. No problems medically. Since the sunroom has many windows (we leave some open with the screens in now that it is getting a bit warmer) he sees other animals "passing through". Although we live in a neighborhood with other homes we are flanked by farms and woods too. So I imagine he sees other cats, deer, etc. Could he be marking his territory? The latest incident just happened 10 min. ago and I can't figure it out. It is around noon here and I have seen no other animals outside today! Does he crave more attention? I work from home most days so I am here during the day.... he doesn't have my undivided attention, but I am here in the house. His box is HUGE (hubby made one for him due to his size--15 lbs.) and we scoop every day or every other day if we forget. Maybe he had a problem with the exterminator that came over this morning (termites). I was talking to him in our office which is where the poopy box is.... Maybe Tiggs smelled other cats on him or just didn't like him and decided to mark his territory??? But why in the sunroom? I am completely puzzled by his behavior. Any suggestions???

I have a male 3 year old cat. He's had a UTI for the past 2 months. He's over it now. Thank god.

However, he uses the potty box but also goes on my tile floors.

My vet said, due to his UTI he is categorizes the potty box as where the pain was when he was trying to urinate.

He's better now. Why is he urinating on my floors??

Any suggestions.............

From decades of living with multiple cats and dogs and their issues,

here is the best formula I've to treat stains and odors:

To one cup of hydrogen peroxide, add one teaspoon baking soda

and one squirt of liquid handsoap. Mix thoroughly and saturate

the carpet, floor, furniture, rug, etc and allow to air dry.

Can be applied from spray bottle and can be doubled, but formula should be used up

each time and not stored.

Dr. Elsey's litter has been successfull in my situation,

but is not always in stock where I shop.

I have a 12 week old kitten. I adopted him from the shelter, and he does fine with the box, however, when we got him, we took him to the vet and found out he was really sick, had TERRIBLE ear mites and an infection. He's been off the meds for about a month. The previous owner of our apartment had 3 cats and my mom said they were grown and very misbehaved. The cats tore the place up, but most was replaced except the carpet. The only places he urinates are by the tub (behind his box), and on a futon chair I have in the office. He does it out of the blue, I don't understand why. I've had cats most of my life and never had one do that. We have clumpling litter, non-scented. He's a good kitten but I worry about why he does it. I feel as if we're doing something wrong..any advice?

These shoes are seen on happy, well dressed feet around the globel There is no reason to wear plain, dull shoes that say little about you and your personality - not to mention seeing the same brown and black shoes everywhere you go! You could be wearing unique and custom-designed Hand Painted Art Shoes
