Wow, I would not have thought of someone stealing them! Raccoons yes, humans no. How distressing and sad to think of them gone and not coming to a happy ending. You have done what you could and made them safer now, but still chilling to know you've been violated. I felt similarly violated when someone stole a little BBQ off my patio, just the fact that someone entered your private space is scary, but to lose the chicks sad because there's a little chick life at risk.

Umm, which neighbors did you mention the arriving chicks to, and do any of them have teenagers? 'Hate to say it, but it almost positively was someone who knew they were there - unless you have a bunch of people wandering your back yard normally who could have stumbled across the cage and, on the spur of the moment, decided to take a couple chicks. Of course, this prospect is even less pleasant, wondering which of the neighbors is so mean, but it might lead you to question if any of them have that boa, boudoir, or cat. 'Sorry to not have much of a cheery thing to say.

KateH: I hadn't told anyone yet. I was hoping to break the news gently, in case of resistance. By now they all know and they're extra sympathetic after the theft. Problem is that my yard is very wooded--and so is the empty acre next door, where local kids hide out to drink beer and smoke out. They likely saw the red light and tarp covering and came over to investigate. 

About that dog...In the past, I've feared for my goats and chickens more from a dog than from my neighbors. But that's kinda changing.

Sorry about your chicks! I would absolutely flip if someone took any feathered friends from my property. 

I think I would react with a full-on security assault: motion-activiated game cameras at stratigic locations (not kidding, I've read about people doing this on chicken forums), locks, alarms (LOUD alarms!), the works.

I would do everything and anything to stop this. Yes they are 'only chickens' they don't cost much etc., but the more work and care you put into them, the more they mean to you, and to have people take them and do who-knows-what with them is just too much.

I would worry about the birds when the grow up and move into the coop, as well. Chickens won't get off the roost and try to get away from intruders once they have settled for the night, they'll just sit and let thenselves be picked up and taken away. Sounds like your coop is going to need a padlock.

p.s. I know you said the cage is padlocked, but could someone pick up the whole cage and take it away? You might want to brood them inside until this blows over....

I was just wondering about Elvio yesterday. =7 Do you have a guess as to Elvio's age? He can't be more than a few months old, right? So you've got roo adolesence to enjoy in the near future. I hope he remains as polite & gentle as he is now.

Anyway -- who'da thunk it? One expects chicken thievery from various critters, but certainly not humans. Go figure.  I have a broody hen sitting on some Buckeye eggs right now, in the largest stall in our barn.  Our barncat might be able to reach her, but I think the Sussex could take him.  =D  After the chicks hatch (3 weeks), we'll get them outside, protected by electric netting, which has thus far deterred any & all predators.  But humans?  Why would anybody steal a chick, for crying out loud?

@Kim:  An LGD is something that has occurred to me before, but (a) I know nothing about training such a dog and (b) the hair.

FarmFashion: Yes, I am investing in a  security camera. Haven't bought it yet, though. Gotta check out Consumer Reports (on my to-do list). But the padlocks are on in the chicks' cage (very heavy and cumbersome, to boot). And there's an additional padlock on the gate that leads to their small rooster-free enclosure, soon to be their coop once I get it built out. (I had it put up after the goats attempted to fry themselves on my AC workings. Now I have to separate the AC from the rest and put up roosting dowels. Should work out nicely.) Here's a pic of the enclosed area as it stands (I know it's messy). The chicks are hiding beneath the Sunbrella tarp. I plan to put a roof on it, lots of bedding, and another chain linked separation from the AC.

Security cam.  If you have a window with a good view, you can get a cam that plugs into DVD or computer for under $50.  I have several of them.  Inexpensive systems with monitors for under $500 from Sam's last I checked (have one of those w/4 cams too).  We've had a little crime spree off and on in our condo complex for years and, oddly, my son was robbed as he came home in the wee hours this morning.  (He's moved home after losing his job.  This economy is just lovely.)

Sorry for your loss Dr. K, get those cams up ASAP.

Forgot this one.  We have several in our community who have webcams pointed out their windows and broadcasting through ustream.tv or similar sites.  They can make the view public or private, at their discretion.  Enables them to keep an eye on things even from work without an expensive security company package.  There was a woman who caught her burglar recently when she saw him on the cam at her house and called police from work!

Well, my suggestion of an LGD was mainly as a deterrant - in general, any dog with these characteristics will accept all animals it grows up with (dog, cat, chicken, goat, sheep, llama, whatever!) as part of their family pack, and will alert to all other intruders.

Actual protection work is not really necessary in most cases.  The simple fact that 100lbs of dog is on the other side of the fence barking at you is reason enough to turn around - particularly when all you're after is a few dollars worth of livestock.  Plus, the dog also serves to guard against wild intruders who won't dare to approach.  The security cam only works to track down the thieves after - and even then, they're not particularly reliable, in my experience.  Alarms can be highly disruptive to neighbours, and can't be trained to differentiate between a moving chicken and an approaching predator.

Dr. K - I'm surprised the French minions didn't alert to the presence of intruders - particularly if the sound reached even your ears.  My dogs would have flipped - I would have slept through it otherwise.  Thank goodness you heard them!!!

Sorry to hear about your loss.  I parked a ex-pen and a wading pool with a wire mesh construction cloth after a raid was attempted on my stock tank set-up. By critters though.  Everyone around here already has chickens. The caterwauling set off the k9 alarm and saved the day and the peeps.

I just picked up a dirty dozen more.  Columbian Rocks this time.  Rounding out my numbers to a cool 30. If you would like some, I can arrange an overnight...

Your comment about Elvio prefering to be inside reminds me of my roo.  Because of where I live, Chet has to live inside.  When he was younger, I would take him out in the yard with me, but every time a plane would go over, he would scream and run for the covered porch.  If I left him out even for a moment without me, he would throw himself against the screen door.  Wimpy roo.......

I'm so sorry to hear about this Dr. Patty. I know you were so looking forward to raising all of these chicks. I can't wrap my head around someone coming into your yard and taking them, and I too hope they are being loved and raised as pets. One of my favorite site is Martha's Vineyard Fiber Farm (fiberfarm.com), she has a breed of livestock dog called a Mareema. It's a great site (can you tell I'm a shareholder?), and she once told a story of a rooster that went crazy and attacked one of the sheep (who is STILL healing and scarred) and the dog fought off the rooster to save the poor sheep. That dog was really beat up / scratched up, but it didn't kill the chicken. Just protected the sheep.
