Got a pet who’s conditioned you to believe that his loving presence is worth all his foul odors? If your pet smells nasty then you probably know exactly what I’m talking about (though some of you may be in denial). Everyone else thinks he stinks and stays away. But you? You love him, aroma and all.
Nonetheless, there is something you can do about her chronic malodor, especially if she falls into one of the following categories of stinkiness. Read up on the concern and, for best results, internalize their listed solutions.
1-The skin sufferers
If the surface of your pet’s skin’s smell is reminiscent of rotting fruit, something freshly dug up from deep underground, or just plain dogginess, you’ll know what I mean.
Solution: Whether this happens year-round or is limited to certain seasons, pets with certain skin conditions such as allergic skin disease and keratinization disorders (characterized by greasy and/or flaky skin), treatment of the underlying disease is generally effective in reducing or eliminating the odors associated with skin infections that accompany it.
Medicated shampoos and antibiotic and/or antifungal treatments are often necessary, at least at first and/or periodically, to tamp down the offending bacteria and/or yeast.
2-The gaseous ones
You know who you are.
Solution: Determining whether your pet has a condition such as intestinal parasitism, IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) or a pancreatic malfunction (as in EPI or “exocrine pancreatic insufficiency”) is crucial. But most pets who suffer excessive flatulence are merely exhibiting a mild intolerance to one or more ingredients in their diets.
Treatment of the primary dysfunction depends on the disease process, of course, but for those who suffer simple digestive intolerances may be helped either with probiotic supplements or through a process of trial and error with respect to diet choices. Carefully switching diets with varying ingredients until a minimum of flatulence is achieved is often fruitful in this regard.
3-The wildlife devotees
These are the pets that stop, drop and roll at the sights and smells of a rotting carcass or raccoon feces (the foulest smelling scat on the planet). Maybe she’s a chronic, stray cat poop consumer (like my Sophie), or a skunk tracking wonder-dog.
Solution: Restriction of a pet’s yard-based or hiking activities is usually not advisable. They need an outlet for their natural drives––and the exercise, of course. Picking up scat in your yard is helpful, as is special fencing to reduce encroachment by certain wildlife species (if you must).
Alternatively and/or additionally, treating the resulting foul odors can be achieved through an excellent, freshly brewed mix of hydrogen peroxide (1 quart), baking soda (1/3 cup) and a dash of a grease-cutting dish soap like Dawn (my favorite).
4-The bad-breath breakfast club
Oral breath, usually secondary to periodontal disease, can lay low a whole crowd of dinner party guests who might otherwise truly enjoy your pet––and their meal.
Solution: Regular brushing (at least twice a week, but daily for some pets) and routine anesthetic dentistry (as often as every few months for severe sufferers) is the mainstay of bad breath resolution.
But some pets just have bad breath that arises chronically from their mouths and/or stomach gases––not necessarily from their teeth. These latter pets may be helped by adjusting the ingredients in their food and possibly by adding parsley to their diet (available in capsules). “Fresh breath” water supplements are not helpful, in my opinion, but some pet owners beg to differ.
5-The anal gland leakers
The two anal glands, found on either side of the anus in dogs and cats occasionally have the propensity to fill up and spill out when over-full. The characteristic stench is perhaps the nastiest odor pets are capable of emitting.
Solution: Getting this under control is usually achieved by expressing the anal glands manually on a regular basis. Veterinarians and experienced groomers are best suited to this task, though many of my owners are willing to learn and manage quite well on their own.
A hydrogen peroxide wipe to the backside is very helpful once the odor becomes apparent.
6-The otic stink-bombs
Ear infections are almost always skin infections. But their specific challenges mean very specific odors distinct from that of the rest of the skin. A fruity-smelling yeast infection that may or may not progress to a stinking bacterial infection is the usual finding.
Solution: Allergic skin disease is the primary cause of external ear infections in both cats and dogs. Infections can be dealt with by treating the underlying condition. Antibiotics and antifungals are used to tackle the infection––and the stink––but it will return (I promise), sometimes even after treating the allergy. After all, not every allergy is 100% treatable.
Cleaning the ears regularly with a mild disinfectant solution is always advisable.
7-The wet dog crowd
Does your dog spend his life in the pool? Here in Miami that’s not uncommon––especially with Labs. Problem is, that also means wet dog smell that chronically lingers.
Solution: Keep your outdoor dog indoors, fence off the pool or invest in a proper canine blow-drier. Additionally, I recommend that you “Furminate” your dog daily to relieve her of some of the undercoat that traps moisture.

Have any more examples and their solution? I’m all ears.

I had a gassy one!! Went through a lot of different brands of food, found that he really cannot tolerate grains. He's on raw now, and we are down to just a few farts a day. On Iams - he would stand up, look at his butt, and leave the room - you knew you were in for it then!! When people in my training classes mention it, or I notice it in class, I usually recommend trying a different brand of food.

We have an anal gland kid here. She's graduated to requiring expression every week or so - or the results can be disastrous.
There is no infection, and we will not consider removal of the glands at this point (with no chronic infection, we just don't see this as an appropriate reaction). However, her glands are difficult to express - our techs play a game of "not it!" when they see us coming. We do 99% of her expressions at home, but if we're going to be at the vet's anyways (sorry, techs!) we pass the buck readily. Thankfully, she's a willing participant.
We've tried EVERYTHING. Just when I think something is making an improvement, I realize her little rear has just been saving up an EXTRA BIG surprise. YUCK.
She's been on raw, food with extra pumpkin, green beans, celery, psyllium fibre, and kibble with 10% fibre. She's currently eating a low-grain, high protein "lite" formula. The idea was that this would allow us to feed her extra without added carbs/fat and bulk up her stool with the extra fibre. She looks great, but her butt still reeks.
Any wild and crazy ideas, Dr. K? Last weekend at our mother's day dinner Lex (the dog) was laying on the couch with my DH's grandmother, and all I could think was "please don't let her butt leak on grandma's leg..." I took precautions and removed her from the couch. It's a good thing, too... it exploded in the car on the way home.

Rottweilers are notorious for their lethal gas problems and my Joella is no exception. When we first got her, we fed Bil Jac. Then one of the dogs we realized his ear problem was probably food related so we switched to Wellness (no corn). They all did well on that but Jo's gas started to get worse and worse until finally I had to semi-retire her (she's my service dog).
I discussed it with our vet a few times but she thought it was just the normal 'gassy dog' syndrome. Until one day Jo let one loose in the exam room. Finally the vet understood! We tried a round of different stuff (yogurts, enzymes, etc) until we got around to food. Wellness is one of the best foods out there so we saved it for last. What we did was switch her to a high protein food (Taste of the Wild) that had less veggies and fruits.
And just a few weeks later, absolutely no gas. Sure, there's the usual stuff that we all have but no more toxic fumes. Amazing. We switched everyone (except the pup) over to it and they are all doing great. Weight on everyone is good as is skin and coat.

Thank you for this post! It is reassuring to know that other owners out there are playing the "we-love-our-dog-so-much-that-we-pretend-she-doesn't-smell" game!
I was wondering if you'd have any advice for smells specific to the foot area? Our Riley is the best dog imaginable, but I can't help but to feel very aware of the way she smells, especially in the presence of guests. I suppose if I had to describe the scent, it would be something like smell of corn chips?
The pads of Riley's feet are, in my opinion, more dry and rough than average. Because she was a shelter-dog, we first were concerned that it might be due to some sort of fungus she may have picked up from her stay at the humane society...our local vet says, though, that everything appears normal and that she would only be concerned with moist, infectious paws instead. She really had no other advice as to her overall smell. Regular baths just don't do the trick. Any suggestions?

What about one of our dogs that eats our other dogs' poop. She leaves her own alone but just waits for one of our other dogs to eliminate, runs over and gobbles it up. However, if it (the poo) has been there several minutes she doesn't touch it. I "pooper-scoop" the yard every day. This dog is also gassy but is otherwise very healthy. She is an indoor/outdoor dog so it's not like she's left alone without human contact or play. Thanks for any suggestions!
Lauren May 18th, 2009 03:05:28 PM
Corn chip toes! I've actually heard that one before. That's usually a sign of a yeast infection--almost always secondary to allergies when noted on the feet or in the ears. A simple approach is to use a medicated shampoo: malaseb and Ketochlor are my favorites. Let them sit five minutes for rinsing and wash the feet every other day. For my Sophie I also use Malaseb wipes. These anti-fungal wipes help treat yeast infections.
Consider, however, that the allergies might be best treated by having you dog tested for allergies or by trying a food trial. Here's a post on this.

Lauren: Yeah, one of my dogs is a cat poop gobbler. Gross and disgusting. I usually just feed her a small meal and the aroma is gone. Apples work, too. As far as ridding her of the behavior, I'm all ears if anyone has suggestions.
Dr. Patty Khuly May 18th, 2009 03:55:24 PM
Speaking of water supplements, what are your thoughts on Tartar Control additives? In particular Suzie's Tartar Liquid?
Ingredients: water, glycerine, sodium benzoate, allantoin, polysorbate 20, sodium salicylate, sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium borate, green FD&C yellow No. 5.
Perhaps this is exactly what you've already mentioned since it does advertise fresh breath, but I'm more interested in tartar control.
Putting my AP Chem to use, we have:
Water and dyes - harmless, unhelpful inactive ingredients
Glycerine - solvent and sweetener that won't feed bacteria that cause plaques and cavities, makes solution feel good in the mouth
Allantoin - promotes healing, moisturization, anti-irritant
Polysorbate 20 - detergent
Sodium Salicylate - bactericide
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate - wetting agent and surfactant used to solubilize, disperse, and emulsify the other ingredients
Sodium Borate - water softener, disinfectant
Seems to match what you'd find in human mouth wash, but then again human mouth wash isn't known to work miracles.
As far as compliance goes, I find it much easier to add a cap full of solution to the dogs' water bowl than to torture eachother with trying to brush.

Ah smells :)
When Goodman gets antibiotics he always starts to pass gas a lot. Probiotics work like a charm (given at a different time than the meds).
He also likes to roll in smelly stuff, especially dead stuff. One walk he rolled both in a dead animal and in horse manure. Those are the only times Goodman gets bathed.

Yes, I've had dogs that would eat cat poo too. It appeared to be a delicacy to them. But dog poo?? She doesn't eat her own or my GSD's, just my other Lab's poo! We've tried watching her and correcting her as she goes towards it. She'll stop but if we glance away for a second she pounces on it and gobbles it as fast as she can! We put sprinkled some cayenne on one of the piles and she sneezed and then stayed away...from thatone. However, the next time she had a chance and their wasn't cayenne added she was right on top of it. I try to go out immediately when my other Lab eliminates but I'm not able to do that all the time. Sure wish someone had an answer to stop this behavior.
Lauren May 18th, 2009 05:17:56 PM
Dr. Khuly, for dogs eating cat poop, there is a simple solution: Tobasco sauce. It's low-tech but quick and effective: cures the habit in one application. The sauce is drizzled over the cat poop, of course. For some of the other smelly problems you mention: adequate nutrition. Dogs and cats fed raw foods do not have foul breaths, periodontal diseases, or gas. Most don't have skin allergies either. As soon as I switched my crew (both dogs and cats) to raw, including chunked meats that they have to sink their teeth into, and raw meaty bones, the problems were gone! Like that, in a matter of a few days. Why our vets don't advise us on the benefits of raw diets is a mystery to me (some do, actually, but few and far between). Yes, there may be risks, but they are easily overcome, and the benefits certainly outweigh them.

I'd give anything to know why Socks stinks.. Took him to the vet, and they couldn't find anything.. Everything checked out okay.. No skin lesions, ear infections, anal sac problems, no eating anything unusual, and no rolling in anything inappropriate.. just the smell of an athlete.. that hasn't taken a shower.. Especially in the a.m. when he gets up... I was concerned about giving him weekly showers, and the vet advised that it was okay, and to try a shampoo.. After three years, he still smells the same.. I guess I'll deal with it if nobody can come up with other solutions
Barri May 18th, 2009 09:53:50 PM
Barri: Try a therapeutic shampoo like Ketochlor or Malaseb. Worth a shot.
Dr. Patty Khuly May 18th, 2009 09:55:39 PM
Or try changing his diet (all new ingredients for 12 weeks minimum)--just for kicks, giggles and a possibility of a "cure."
Dr. Patty Khuly May 18th, 2009 09:56:26 PM
my Silky-haired terrier smells like raw, almost-rotten eggs in winter. He only eats 3 Dog Bakery chicken kibble, supplimented with occasional 3DB Entree for Dogs (you can buy this at some grocery stores now!) and a rare 3DB rawhide treat.
Zorro stinks, plain and simple. he smells good right after i bathe and groom him (complete with an Island Mist pina-colada spray) he smells fantastic, but the second he spends more than 5 minutes outside, he starts to stink again.
boo.
Charity May 19th, 2009 05:10:50 AM
Oh my gosh, this is great! I think I've run into all of these at one time or another
There was the rescue with such horrid teeth that we could smell his mouth from across the room. He was HW+, I had to put weight on him to get his his weight where it should be so he could undergo HW treatment - BEFORE he had his teeth done and was neutered. His mouth was so bad sometimes he ate only to please me. I gave him doggy breath mints so we could stand to be in the same room with him. That is something I have advised others in the rescue to use if they have a dog that can't have a dental right away. Not something I would use all the time although I have been known to hand one to one of the poop eaters so I can stand to have them on my lap!
And there was my little Sabrina who could clear a room if fed anything but Iams lamb and rice. Silent but deadly farts. But if she had her Iams, no problem. Sabrina would also "skunk" us if scared. Those anal glands - WOW.
I have a forever foster with oily sebborhea that stunk to high heaven and had no hair when I got him. His skin was covered with black gunk. The vet told us that the oil came out of his skin too fast, built up and started to turn rancid and eat his skin. Now, five years later with regular baths (sometimes twice a week!) with a coal tar and sulphur shampoo, he has a beautiful coat, hardly ever scratches and is a happy little guy. He also takes prednisone every other day, 4 benadryl a day, has a half scoop of Transfer factor on his food twice a day and eats Wellness. It took us a while to find the right combination of things, but it was worth it.
Oh my, there are a LOT of stinks our furry friends can come up with! And me with, as one friend puts it, with a super-human sense of smell! I do get to the bottom of stinks and find a way to deal with them. Havn't had a stink defeat me yet!
What's that? Hmm, one of the puppy mill rescues had an accident in her crate - at least that is just laundry and soap and water! gotta run...
Robinsdogs May 19th, 2009 07:12:28 AM
Thanks for my reminder to be grateful to you and just generally today. Skin problems, bad breath, ear stink, and gas all completely gone or dramatically reduced by diet changes. How nice to simply forget they were ever such huge issues in our lives!
My Shiba is a poop eater. Mostly cat poo but sometimes dog poo too. Since the diet changes, this has virtually stopped too. For a while, I was obsessed with this topic because it drove me batty. I'll see if I can find what I wrote up a while back for my Shiba friends.
Seems like some breeds are stinkier than others. My Shiba has little smell except when wet but my Choc Lab has an inherent scent that no amount of bathing would get rid of (although it isn't nearly as potent as the scent of my first Lab, a Black).
Note to self: stock Dr. K's items + tomato juice at new house in preparation for wildlife interactions since fence won't be up before move in date :)

Well, this wasn't as hard to find as I thought it would be!
Wikipedia now has a rather nice summary on the topic: "Coprophagia is a behavior often observed in dogs. Hofmeister, Cumming, and Dhein (2001) wrote that this behavior in dogs has not been well-researched, and they are currently preparing a study. In a preliminary paper, they write that there are various hypotheses for this behavior in canines, although none have been proven:
"To obtain attention from their caretakers. From anxiety, stress, or upon being punished for bad behaviors. They had been punished for having defecated in the past, and attempt to clean up out of fear of being punished again. Because dogs are, by nature, scavengers, and this is within the range of scavenger behavior. To prevent the scent from attracting predators. Because the texture and temperature of fresh feces approximates that of regurgitated food, which is how mothers in the wild provide solid food to their pups. Because of the protein content of the feces (particularly cat feces), or over-feeding, leading to large concentrations of undigested matter in the feces. Due to assorted health problems, including:
"Pancreatitis Intestinal infections Food allergies, leading to mal-absorption Because they are hungry, such as when eating routines are changed, food is withheld, or nutrients are not properly absorbed. Carnivores may sometimes eat or roll in the feces of their prey to ingest and exude scents which mask their own. Some veterinarians recommend adding meat tenderizer to dog food, as this makes the feces taste excessively bad to dogs. Several companies produce food additives that can also be added to the animal's food to make feces taste bad. Often, these food additives will contain Capsicum Oleoresin which gives off a repugnant odor making the fecal matter undesirable to the dog." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coprophagia
http://home.gci.net/~divs/behavior/coprophagia.html (Sure wish they'd finish the study and publish the results :)
I'm convinced mine does it from too low of protein in her food mix (and increasing the percentage of protein has substantially reduced her inclination to raid the cat's litter box) and from mal-absorption due to allergies and/or prednisone. Pretty sure when she was a pup it was more related to cleaning up and that there was quite a bit of food still in there since puppies digestive systems are less well developed. I also suspect that some of the additives in commercial food inhibit absorption.
There's also some pretty major research out of Tbilisi, Georgia where they are recovering macrophages (antibodies)from excrement of healthy people and thoserecovering from an illnessto treat those who are ill and whose immune systems either don't produce the antibodies or don't produce them fast enough. The research indicates that it is potentially a very viable way to treat epidemics; much faster and more effectivethan creating a chemical vaccine or treatment.
I have a friend who calls poop eating dogs the Self Cleaning Model. Given how many are driven batty by this, you'd think there would be 10 published studies on this!
PJBoosinger May 19th, 2009 09:48:42 AM
Charity- my dad's shih tzu had this problem as well (sulfur farts) until he removed all poultry from his diet. He was intolerant of chicken.
Now he doesn't clear out the room. :)

Ironically, my dog loves getting into the litter box, but he eats the actual litter, not the poop. He loves the urine clumps. Makes for some pretty foul breath. This is also the dog who decided to eat a flowery-scented candle. I love him; I just dont' understand him.
Terrie May 19th, 2009 12:36:23 PM
Terrie - reminds me of a whippet mix I lived with for a while. She used to break into the bathroom... to eat bars of soap. Lovely dog, but crazy as a loon. ;O)
Kim May 19th, 2009 07:49:05 PM
We deal with two of these issues. We have two excessively gassy bulldog mutts. We tried raw- on raw, it was worse. It's a pity, because one of the dogs I would be able to take to work if it weren't for the fact that she can clear an office in record time. Right now it's better than it had been- they are on exclusive and get probiotics.
The second issue we have is poop eating. One of the yorkies eats dog poop on occasion, but always manages to find the cat poop left behind by our neighborhood ferals before I do. The worst part is, she often eats some and brings me the rest. If we don't open her mouth to check it before letting her in, we are likely to end up with an unwelcome gift placed on our pillow.

I just learned of your blog, and I'm writing to tell you that I adopted a beautiful GSMD in December from a shelter. For three months we had stools that could hardly be called stools--very frequent voluminous piles of tan mashed potato-looking stool. Finally, my vet brought up the possibility of EPI. We had him tested (my dog, not the vet--vet is a "she") and his cTLI was .04. Long story short, I learned from a Yahoo group site how to treat this horrible disease. My vet admitted that most vets do not know how to treat it because it is rare. But you knew that already. My main point is that after my doing a ton of research, learning so much that I feel I might qualify to open my own vet clinic :) my then-58-lb "puppy" with ribs showing is now a 72-pound puppy, and still growing. He also has SIBO and is being treated for that. If you don't know about the Yahoo group, please let me know, as this poor boy would probably not be alive if it were not for all the people around the world with EPI dogs who also research and learn and share their experiences with others. You can email me at www.lifes.absurdities@gmail.com. Thanks for all you do!
Jolane May 20th, 2009 06:10:51 PM
Jolane: Thanks for your comments. So happy to hear he's doing so much better!
Jen: Raw or non-raw, it's still mostly about the individual proteins, carbohydrates or fats. Perhaps she's intolerant of beef or chicken proteins or fats?

On poo-eating - I know a military dog trainer who swears that a large spoonful of pineapple juice put on the food (of the dog producing the poo that's being eaten, not the dog that's doing the eating) will stop this. His theory is that the enzymes in the juice cause the "attractive" elements to be more fully digested, leaving the result less... er... yummy. :) I don't know if it works for cat poo, or even if cats will eat food with pineapple juice on it!

Readers should know that many, if not most, smelly conditions above are quickly and effectively treated by switching to high 'quality' kibble or - even better - real, preferrably raw, meat and raw meaty bones (RMB) for your dog.
Kibble typically advertised on TV or sold in veterinary offices is not high 'quality.'
See www.dogaware.com, and/or read The Whole Dog Journal (www.whole-dog-journal.com).
Seek a second opinion from a holistic veterinarian (www.ahvma.org).

Hi all,
I'm astonished and relieved to find that there are so many dog owners out there who know their dogs stink to high heaven and are conscientiously trying to find and fix the cause. I have a small shop in an historic building in a tourist area, which means no high tech ventilation - and yes, we've gone round with the landlord and the building inspector and the historic commission about why this isn't good for anybody.
For those of you thinking "My dog just smells like a dog!" I can tell you that if I can smell your dog after three days of precious customers retching in the doorway exclaiming "Oh my GOD! What's that SMELL!!!??" -and running away- you might reconsider your denial. Never mind me, just trying support my family and my community here. Your DOG is suffering, AND you are hurting other dog owners.
Pet treats outside for heading off the worst offenders isn't always possible - sometimes we actually have to wait on people ; )
So, grateful thanks to all who are aware that the enclosed space of a tiny gift shop may not be the best place to socialize Stinky - at least until his dietary and health issues have been addressed.

I have heard from several people that they changed the food and also started the pet on a product call DINOVITE and it has helped
with the gas problem along with several other problems the dog was having such as shedding, bad breath, sores, dry coat so I
started my dog on this product and they were right it has HELPED in a way I was surprised so try this stuff I am here to tell
you it does work.

Now that I've had the time to read the comments again on dogs eating dog poo, I just want to say "thanks" for the input. All my dogs have been ProPlan dogs. Their coats shine and their health has been excellent. We switch between the different varieties such as beef, chicken, lamb and the dogs love them all. One thing I did think of thought - my "poop-eater"really eats fast. In fact she just about inhales the food! I bought "BrakeFast" bowls for our three dogs. They have helped in slowing down my "poop-eater" and my GSD. My other Lab doesn't eat fast but she got one too. Here's the link www.brake-fast.net/ in case any of you have problems with your dogs eating too fast. These bowls do help. That brings me back to another question, I wonder if by gulping her food she may still feels hungry and that's why when we let the dogs out she eats poop too? Just a thought but I'm really stumped. She's begun eating the GSD's poo too but still not her own. I try to clean up right away but can't always do it. The other reasons given (in above posts) for this problem don't apply to her. I will check the Whole-Dog Journal. Thanks!
Lauren May 24th, 2009 04:03:01 PM
Another cause of horrid smell that can be mistaken for an oral disease is a lip fold ulcer or infection. Sometimes hard to see,and not uncommon in my breed (English cockers),you can isolate the exact spot from whic the odor arises. Various remedies exist.
I have a very gassy doxie and she was on a low residue food for a awhile. Then I switched her to a high quality kibble which had beet pulp and also restarted canned food (so she had MORE fat) and she's been great. I can't put my finger on what the problem might have been.

Regarding the anal gland exploder - you said you tried raw with lots of fiber to bulk up the stool. I'd go back to raw but use more bone instead of the fiber. One day a week give nothing but a big knuckle bone. Throughout the rest of the week, make sure each meal either has ground bone in it, or give Lex a bone with some meat on it (chicken back, turkey neck, lamb neck). (too many of the raw meals prepared commercially either don't have any or not enough bone in them, so choose the brand carefully or get your butcher to grind up chicken with bone for you)
The poops will be very firm - the extra fiber in the form of veg fiber you used is just too soft to work on anal gland issues. Bony poops really do the trick. Give it about a month to decide if it's working but honestly I've seen this work very well on my own & foster dogs - I've seen bony poops come out with anal gland secretions still fresh on them. They clean the glands as they go......
