The final installment in Sophie Sue’s saga. It was inevitable. She was euthanized last night at home atop her favorite pillow on my bed. She died peacefully.
“We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way.We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan.”

We came to know her through your writings; recognized her through your photos; never had the opportunity to touch her or nuzzle her fur. How, then, can it be that we still feel such a resounding loss towards a dog we knew only through the internet? Please accept our deepest sympathy for the loss of your beloved Sophie.

Old Dogs Do Not Die
We have a secret, you and I,
That no one else shall know,
For who, but I can see you lie,
Each night, in fireglow?
And who but I can reach my hand
Before we go to bed,
And feel the living warmth of you
And touch your silken head?
And only I walk woodland paths,
And see, ahead of me,
Your small form racing with the wind,
So young again, and free.
And only I can see you swim
In every brook I pass.
And, when I call, no one but I
Can see the bending grass.

Oh my goodness. As a loyal reader and fan of Dolittler, reading this makes my heart ache for you. It was a privilege to get to 'know' Sophie Sue. Thank you for sharing her (and all her animal siblings) with us.
We recently lost one of own; the pain is still acute. I'll share a song that helped us (and still does) free the sometimes trapped, amorphous, diffuse grief that comes with loss.
Here is 'Afterglow' by Inxs.
Here I am, Lost in the light of the moon, That comes through my window.
Bathed in blue, The walls of my memory divides, The thorns from the roses. It's you and the roses.
Touch me and I will follow, In your afterglow. Heal me from all this sorrow, As I let you go. I will find my way When I see your eyes, Now I'm living,In your afterglow.
Here I am, Lost in the ashes of time, But who wants tomorrow, In between, Longing to hold you again, I'm caught in your shadow. I'm losing control.
My mind drifts away,We only have today.
Touch me and I will follow,In your afterglow. Heal me from all this sorrow, As I let you go.I will find my way, I will sacrifice, ‘Til the blinding day, When I see your eyes.
Now I'm living, In your afterglow [in your afterglow]. When the veils are gone, As I let you go, As I let you go.
Touch me and I will follow, In your afterglow. Heal me from all this sorrow, As I let you go. I will find my way I will sacrifice, Now I'm living,In your afterglow.
Bathed in blue,The walls of my memory divides,The thorns from the roses. It's you who is closest.
Our Deepest Sympathy.
Rest. Run. Play.
You are free, Sophie Sue.

When our blk. standard poodle passed...Maggie Our Vet gave us this scripture... Ecclesiastes 3:18-20. As she took her last breath... I knew someday I would be with her as the scripture said...what peace I had.. but the hole in my heart when she left will never be filled... but there is 4 more spaces in my heart that are filled with furkids... the pain pain passed and replaced by the joy of having Maggie. Pictures bring smiles now... Time is a kind cushion....the pain gets less and less... Aren't you grateful that God picked you to have Sophie... That was a special gift just for you.. what a tremendous blessing you got...

I send you my heart felt sympathy. It is the most difficult for us left behind, isn't it...
I found these words on another blog, and it said Author Unknown.
It touches my heart and hope it in some little way, can help heal your...
And God asked the dog spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a dog, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.
Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.
But don't they understand? asked God
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is....forever and ever and ever
Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious dog
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.

Dr. Khuly,
Catching up on your posts after being gone a couple weeks; I am sorry to learn about Sophie Sue. I found no words of comfort at such a time but as with all life experiences that are painful, I needed time and plenty of it. I recently had to have my dog put down and had so many unanswered medical questions. You may be better at putting those questions behind you since you are a vet, or possibly that makes it even harder?
Just read "headache" post. My dog had similar symptoms, always loved having you pet top of head but then it became obvious it bothered her immensely, as well as just getting near her head, the motion of your hand nearby her eyes, etc., you could see her flinch, just as you described. This never went away. My vet dismissed it. Towards the end, she had what seemed like focal seizures, much eye squinting and head shivers. A pic taken a week before euthansia spoke volumes, she was flinching, squinting, and to me had a "pained" expression, like I have seen with true migraine sufferers during an acute exacerbation in the ER. Wish I knew the answer to this headache question.
Tramadol and prednisone is what I was giving; it did not help the "top-of-the-head" issue, head shivers, etc., made my dog too groggy and doped up, even at a low dose.
I continue to look for answers, reading everything I can find available but haven't found anything specific that addresses this. If I do, I will send it your way.
Take good care of yourself right now.
Hugs,
Deb

Dr. Khuly,
I am so saddened by the passing of Sophie Sue. Our beloved pets are with us for too short of a time.

The Journey by Crystal Ward Kent
When you bring a pet into your life, you begin a journey - a journey that will bring you more love and devotion than you have ever known, yet also test your strength and courage. If you allow, the journey will teach you many things about life, about yourself, and most of all, about love. You will come away changed forever, for one soul cannot touch another without leaving its' mark.
Along the way, you will learn much about savoring life's simple pleasures - jumping in leaves, snoozing in the sun, the joy of puddles, and even the satisfaction of a good scratch behind the ears. If you spend much time outside, you will be taught to truly experience every element for no rock, leaf, or log will go unexamined, no rustling bush will be overlooked, and even the very air will be inhaled, pondered, and noted as being full of valuable information. Your pace may be slower - except when heading home to the food dish - but you will become a better naturalist, having been taught by an expert in the field. Too many times we hike on automatic pilot, our goal being to complete the trail rather than enjoy the journey. We miss the details - the colorful mushrooms on the rotting log, the honeycomb in the old maple snag, the hawk feather caught on a twig.
Once we walk as a dog does, we discover a whole new world. We stop; we browse the landscape, we kick over leaves, peek in tree holes, look up, down, all around. And we learn what any dog knows: that nature has created a marvelously complex world that is full of surprises, that each cycle of the seasons brings ever changing wonders, each say an essence all its own. Even from indoors you will find yourself more attuned to the world around you. You will find yourself watch summer insects collecting on a screen (How bizarre they are! How many kinds there are!), or noting the flick and flash of fireflies through the dark. You will stop to observe the swirling dance of windblown leaves, or sniff the air after a rain. It does not matter that there is no objective in this; the point is in the doing, in not letting life's most important details slip by.
You will find yourself doing silly things that your pet-less friends might not understand: spending thirty minutes in the grocery aisle looking for the cat food brand your feline must have, buying dog birthday treats, or driving around the block an extra time because your pet enjoys the ride. You will roll in the snow, wrestle with chewy toys, bounce little rubber balls 'til your eyes cross and even run around the house trailing your bathrobe tie - with a cat in hot pursuit - all in the name of love. Your house will become muddier and hairier. You will wear dark clothing and buy more lint rollers. You may find dog biscuits in your pocket or purse, and feel the need to explain that an old plastic shopping bag adorns your living room rug because your cat loves the crinkly sound.
You will learn the true measure of love - the steadfast undying kind that says, "It doesn't matter where we are or what we do or how life treats us as long as we are together." Respect this always. It is the most precious gift any living soul can give another. You will not find it often and among the human race. And you will learn humility. The look in my dog's eyes often made me feel ashamed. Such joy and love at my presence. She saw not some flawed human who could be cross and stubborn, moody or rude, but only her wonderful companion. Or maybe she saw those things and dismissed them as mere human foibles, not worth considering, and so chose to love me anyway. If you pay attention and learn well, when the journey is done you will not just be a better person, but the person your pet always knew you to be – the one they were proud to call beloved friend.
I must caution you that this journey is not without pain. Like all paths of true love, the pain is part of loving. For as surely as the sun sets, one day your dear animal companion will follow a trail you cannot yet go down. And you will have to find the strength and love to let them go. A pet's time on earth is far too short - especially for those that love them. We borrow them, really, just for a while and during those brief years they are generous enough to give us all their love, every inch of their spirit and heart, until one day there is no other left. The cat that only yesterday was a kitten is all too soon old and frail and sleeping in the sun. The young pup of boundless energy wakes up stiff and lame, the muzzle now gray. Deep down we somehow always knew this journey would end. We knew that if we gave our hearts they would be broken. But give them we must for it is all they ask in return. When the time comes, and the road curves ahead to a place we cannot see, we give one final gift and let them run ahead - young and whole once more. "Godspeed, good friend," we say, until our journey comes full circle and our paths cross again.

Dear Dr. Khuly,
I am so sorry for your loss of Sophie Sue. When this has happened to me on losing a pet, I was upset that I had phantom sightings. Somehow I thought I was going crazy. I was comforted by Jimmy Stewart's reading of "A Dog Named Beau" on Johnny Carson's show. Should you begin seeing Sophie Sue, just remember it is the power and wonder of memory and all of the happy and ordinary times you shared with her. It is testimony of her contribution to your life

Chris and I are saddened by the news of Sophie Sue's death. So many of us felt close to her throughout her life and followed her path as she battled cancer. We envisioned your treks to Broward for SS's radiation treatments and struggles financially. Some of us were lucky to have personally seen and touched your baby. I loved and love her name and hope that Cody and Sophie Sue have found eachother. I hope that they are joyfully playing and possibily sharing memories of their lives with their "special" owners who loved them unconditonally.

I know and understand your loss, and my heart weeps with you there. She was a real cutie girl. How comforting to know that a very special person cared and loved her so much. you no doubt were a good steward of God's beloved creature.[ psalm 50:10-11]. I am sure God smiles upon you for your care & love for her., for He too loves His creaures.and I know her soul lives on{ Psalm 74:19}. May her memories console you and the knowledge that she lives on- in a heavenly place.

I'm very sorry, Dr. Khuly. I know you've cried more than a tear or two, and you have a hole in your heart. But Sophie's love and wonderful life will fill that heart with warmth, beautiful memories and smiles. She knew your love and that means a lot to you both.

Dr. Khuly,
Catching up on your posts after being gone a couple weeks; I am sorry to learn about Sophie Sue.
Hugs,
Deb

Weep not for me though I am gone into that gentle night. Grieve if you will, but not for long upon my soul's sweet flight. I am at peace, my soul's at rest there is no need for tears. For with your love I was so blessed for all those many years. There is no pain, I suffer not, the fear now all is gone. Put now these things out of your thoughts, in your memory I live on. Remember not my fight for breath remember not the strife. Please do not dwell upon my death, but celebrate my life.

Rest easy, Sophie Sue.

Dear Dr. Khuly,
I am so sorry for your loss of Sophie Sue.
