Not having owned a television in 10 years, I’m feeling pretty pop culture deprived lately. So when I heard about a woman who lost her dog to a coyote in the Hollywood Hills, I had no idea this had become something of a gossip rag sensation. After all, coyotes take small pets all the time, right?
Jessica Simpson––whom I’m told is something of a poster child for quintessential blonde stupidity within the reality TV circuit––is the bereaved owner of a Maltipoo named Daisy who last week was taken by a coyote in plain sight of her horrified owner.
When Ms. Simpson tweeted her loss to the world, she begged for help in finding five year-old Daisy, employing her celebrity and her cash in a mad dash to locate her dog. In doing so, she clearly hadn’t internalized the reality that a five-pound Maltipoo could hardly be expected to survive a coyote’s drive-by snatch. But you never know, right?
Since I had no previous interest in this woman, her career or her celebrity status, the fact that this story would resonate at all with me is primarily thanks to her heartfelt attempt––against all odds––to try anything within her power to save her dog. And that appeals immensely, no matter how annoying, cloying and embarrassing to my gender she might otherwise seem.
The tale also captivates because of the creative lengths Ms. Simpson went to by way of tracking down her Daisy. Apparently, there are ways beyond the lowly poster, the middling microchip and the expensive GPS collar to find your lost pets––I just didn’t know about them until I read about Daisy’s plight.
FindToto is an interesting service I’d gladly support with my dollars were my pets to lose their way. For between $70 and $875, your nearest neighbors will all receive phone calls describing your pet and asking for their help. The price difference depends on the number of neighbors you want called. The lower the density of your neighborhood, the fewer neighbors you might need to ask.
FindToto will actually call between 250 and 10,000 residences in the search to find your dog (hence the price differential). All this can be done within minutes of a disappearance, which is what’s led some to dub this service the “Amber Alert” of the pet world. This kind of head start leaves you time to whip up posters and drive all over the neighborhood knowing you’re truly doing all you can to find your lost one.
While researching FindToto, I came across another interesting option: Dogs Finding Dogs. If you happen to live on the Atlantic seaboard, there’s a Pennsylvania to Virginia-based K9 tracking service that specializes in finding lost pets. They, too, employ and endorse the FindToto option, which is available across the US.
Apparently, these methods work. And when you consider that the odds are weighted heavily against lost pets’ finding their way back home (without ID up to 90% won’t), these serious services are incredible additions to the mix of options currently at our disposal.
Tagging and microchipping are musts. There’s no substitute for vigilance and fencing. Posters and neighborhood cruising are necessary. But when all else fails (and yes, this includes coyotes, too), rest assured that you have other options at your fingertips.

nice post. i had no idea these options existed -makes me wish i thought of a $875 calling service! i'm happy to see that most puppies that come through my office are already microchipped, and i have always encouraged clients to microchip even their lap dogs and indoor-only cats. it still amazes me though that some would decline such an inexpensive ($50) measure for tracking down a lost pet.
i do have problems with the lack of global standardization of microchip frequencies. in particular, i am NOT a fan at all of the AVID chip. this brand encrypts their chip's serial number, requiring a specialized [patented] reader to pull the code. all to pad the payrolls of those who manufacture the chips/reader. obviously not in the best interest of the pet. this is in addition to this particular chip's tendency to migrate away from the implant site (between the shoulders) -i've scanned chips near the elbow!

It may be due to the small size of our town - but we've had luck getting two wayward dogs back to their homes in fairly short order by way of Facebook.
In one situation someone had found the dog and posted it's picture; meanwhile her owners were posting pictures of their own. We weren't all mutual Facebook friends, but started sharing her picture and she was back home by the next morning.
Just last Thursday, a Newfoundland named Juno, escaped from her yard and was on the lam. Her owners posted a Facebook alert and she was back home with a couple of hours.
I know it sounds crazy, but it's a great way to communicate with people that you know and trust...you can get a picture up fast. A couple of homeless kittens have found homes through our Facebook friends too!

Losing a pet is traumatizing and very painful to all of us. It's a great idea to try to do anything in our power to get our animals back if they may still be alive. In keeping with Facebook, another astonishing success has been the social network site for moms, cafemom. At least once a week, someone posts a lost pet journal and 9 times out of 10, the post is updated within a day or two to announce that said pet was found, is (usually) safe/healthy, and back home.

I am still amazed by the number of folks that still do not put a tag on their pets' collars. When I see a collar on a tag, I see "I want my dog back.". No tag and I figure you don't care. Seems like once a month we are looking for a lost greyhound without a tag......why? Because those with tags are found quickly.
But coyote snatch... not much you can do except get a real dog, I guess. Just kidding :-).

Anytime it comes up, I have to plug it, just b/c I think it's one of the few things Banfield gets right...unencrypted 125 and 134 frequency chips, both implanted for about $30. Our hospital recently switched to just using the 134, which is $25 by itself. We'll even do them "outpatient", so no office visit/exam charge!

We were successful several months ago in returning a chihuahua to its owner through a homeowners association email distribution list. The neighbor emailed me and 150 other neighbors received the message. By the next day the pet was back home!

Ana: Living in your neighborhood as I do, I was going to reference this Facebook-ish success...but you beat me to it. In any case, it's my view that anything that gets your communities' attention is the most effective technique--Facebook email lists, etc. If you don't know your community well enough (or it's too dense to manage easily), I think Find Toto is a brilliant solution. I agree with Dr. L...I wish I'd thought of it first.

I like the idea, but it's just so expensive that it's only an option for a very few.

Greyhound owners across the country have had an Amber Alert online ( www.forum.greytalk.com ) for several years now. A dog lost in Maine can be helped by people in California (and everywhere else) who will fax & e-mail vets, AC officers, shelters, other rescues, police/fire/service departments, even post offices to alert others to 'BOLO' for the lost dog. A template for flyers are available online, as well as several threads of info about how to get a search going. And a number of other greyhound owners will join in searches to get a dog home. I've been involved in several, and thank dog, those have all been successful. Sadly, there are times when they aren't, but it's far better to try than to give up.

Don't automatically assume a pet without a collar isn't a loved pet. I have a few cats who literally pop off their collar- any design- the moment it's on. The safety feature also makes it easy for a very determined feline to lose its collar.
On top of that, I have dogs that consistently destroy their collars- and their tags! I buy them the cutest tags and collars, for what reason, I'm not sure- and within a week or two, they are dust from playing with one another.

Has anybody noticed the new master chip lookup sites that have been put online recently? There's checkthechip.com, a service of "Chloe Standard". It currently is only able to give an opinion of the most likely database to have an owner record, by finding a chip's manufacturer/distributor through simple number-range checking. (Seems they haven't had any more luck in signing up tributary registries than the old amacausa.org "umbrella" project did.)
But, there's also the American Animal Hospital Association's new petmicrochiplookup.org site, which, ta-da, actually has three tributary registries in place- AKC-CAR, HomeAgain, and Petlink. They claim four current "participants", but the fourth is "ResQ" which doesn't seem to have a database at all, judging from its website which links to the Petlink database. It's unclear in what way ResQ counts as a fourth "participant", but hey, just getting THREE databases hooked up is quite an achievement given past attempts. And they're working on others which I assume would include AVID's PETtrac and 24PetWatch.
AAHA warns that their site is a work in progress; in particular I found their front-end parsing to be sloppy. I tried entering three different common representations of the code of one AVID Friendchip, specifically these three:
123456789
123-456-789 and
AVID*123*456*789
And received three different results. (None of which was an "unsupported formatting, try again"-type indication.)
The AAHA site has other peculiarities also; its Terms and Conditions require of the user that "You represent and warrant that you are at least 18 years of age" thereby making the service non-universal for every finder of a lost pet. "Chloe Standard" does not seem to have such a limitation.

I think the suggestions & services are great! A chip only helps , once the pet is caught or stops running. But the connections of Facebook with pictures , etc--let the community know the dog is missing and wanted back!
If I see a dog without a collar, I think that the dog has slipped it off---perhaps still connected to a run or chain.

A greyhound without a tag may have thrown its tag collar. Since greyhounds and other "needlenose" dogs have necks significantly bigger around than their heads, their collars come off much more easily than bigger-headed dogs'. Beyond microchipping, there is really no other way to safely attach contact info to a grey.
Besides, one has to catch a greyhound before the question of contacting the owner comes into play. Greys stay lost longer because they can move so far so fast, so there's a lot of ground for searchers to cover.
As KateH says, GreyTalk has a history of copious amounts of helpful, time-tested info, and many people who are willing to help, whether locally or long distance. (When posting on the site, be careful not to tick off the moderators and their sometimes-seemingly-based-on-a-whim moderation. If banned, groveling to the moderator in question may get you reinstated, from what I saw several years ago.)
Greyhound adoption agencies also have ways to contact people willing to drop everything and help, plus some have live traps, which can make the difference in bringing a grey home safe and sound. Anyone involved in finding a lost greyhound should make sure its adoption agency has been contacted, as well as -- if the owners have moved since adopting, or the grey is otherwise out of its adopting area -- the greyhound adoption agency(s) in the area where the greyhound is.
And finally, racing greyhounds have ear tatoos which can help finders get in touch with an owner who has posted contact info on greyhound-data.com, or via the grey's adoption agency if you know which one it is.

Are you saying the AVID chips migrates more often than other chips? Why is that? Is there something different about their design?
My dog has an AVID chip (she came with it) and it is currently closer to her tail than her head. :( I'm considering chipping with a second chip, just in case she doesn't get a thorough scan in the event of being lost.

I'm with Trish. One of our cats has worn her collar and tag quite happily since we got her and her shelter mate as kittens a year ago. The other cat will work on a collar for days if necessary until she gets it off. We've tried several different safety designs and she's defeated them all.

Agreed on the migrating collars (my Slumdog manages to get out of his harness and collar all the time. It's scary.).
...and on the migrating microchips: Anecdotally speaking, I've never seen a migrating chip other than AVIDs. And yes, if your microchip has migrated to an unpopular-to-search location, it's time to install another one.

Apparently little dogs can survive coyote abductions--my friend wrote me this in response to the Jessica Simpson story:
"My sisters small dog was abducted by a coyote and they found him a few days later. In very bad shape-puncture wounds on tongue, mouth, muzzle, etc., but he pulled himself out of the canyon. It was horrible! But we are so glad he had the will to survive and made it back home. That was 4 years ago. He seems to have no trauma after the fact, he's still great with other dogs at the dog park, etc. No fear! Yep, he's one scrappy Peekapoo! There are happy endings to coyote abductions. I fear jessica's dog isn't so lucky."

I'm sure it can happen (collar slips off), but greyhounds can easily where collars and tags. I have 6 greyhounds currently and the collar and/or tag has never ever slipped off in the 16 years of owning greyhounds... at least not that I can remember. Everytime we are looking for a lost greyhound locally, the owner admits the greyhound did not have a collar and tag on. The last one could have been reunited about 3 days sooner with a tag but was sitting in someone's house waiting for the finder to see a lost sign. Generally, those wearing tags are quickly reunited. The tattoos are nice, but sometimes hard to read and not everyone knows about them or where to call with the info.

The Missing Pet Partnership, founded by Kat Albrecht, author of The Lost Pet Chronicles, offers tremendous information about finding a lost pet. These folks have studied government research in how large letters on a sign must be in order to be seen from a moving car, what colors are the best to be sen, etc. So they use this research to design a poster that really gets results. One of our adopters lost our adopted cat, and didn't notify us for two weeks. We put up posters, handed out flyers, searched. After four months, we ran across the Missing Pet Partnership website (www.lostapet.org), and within a week had Manley back in our arms just by changing our poster. We asked the lady who had been feeding him if she had seen our previous posters, and she said no, even though the new, neon-colored, full size poster was in the same place. It was just that much more noticeable.
And the website (www.lostapet.org) offers lost pet profiling. For instance, the way you would search for a lost indoor cat is different from the way you search for a lost outdoor cat.

I can endorse Ms. Albrecht's organization. She goes back a long way, in SAR and then pet search, and has a good reputation.
Not all "lost pet finders" are so, and there is one individual in particular who keeps turning up like a bad penny at searches for humans or animals where he can bilk the distressed family for exhorbitant fees. His skill at avoiding arrest is indeed a wonder.
The mid-Atlantic group that you reference is unknown to me. They decline to mention a dollar amount on their "fees" page, and they do not provide the surnames of their handlers. Three big red flags.

Heather, I really don't want to irk you (as I respect your skill and talent in this, and similar, areas), so please don't take this the wrong way. I'm even a bit unsure of how to ask this, but I wonder what you mean by saying that since the Dogs Finding Dogs site doesn't have the last names of the handlers listed, that that is a 'red flag' consideration. I can think of a few instances of unwanted attention that poeple I know in rescue have gotten from having their last names listed on websites. (And there are other professions whose members don't list their last names in public view for similar reasons.) There's a link to a commendation the first team received and the handler's name is Anne Willis.
While they don't state exact fees, they say they are to cover transportation costs, and that they donate some monies to rescue groups. I'm not sure of the details of SAR groups that help police/sheriffs/fire departments, but I think it's SOP that they are all volunteer because they are searching for humans, who are considered in a different way than a lost dog is by the overall community standards. (I'm not going to get into discussing the ins and outs of that standard.) I do wonder what your meaning of 'red flag' about fees is in a group that ask for transportation costs for their call out to search for lost dogs. I really don't mean to defend or condem their fees, but there are often rewards for lost pets, so ..... ahkk! I am confused about this, because I don't want to make you think I'm dumb for not understanding your points, but I guess I just wonder if you could expand on your comment.
Also, is the man you mention a 'pet psychic' and is he charging fees whether he has any success or not? I don't for a second support charlatans (and, IMO, that's what any 'psychic' is), and I wonder if you, or anyone (PJ?) knows if laws for fraud are/can ever be used in conjunction with animals? I actually don't know if there are fraud laws if the 'psychic' is 'helping' in searches for humans, either, but I think there must be a double standard thing vis a vis animals, if there are any laws at all.
