Got an oily animal problem? Above all others, Dawn is my go-to product.
I spent the eighties and early nineties washing oil-spilled seabirds in dilute Dawn solutions. The tar glopped feet of gulls, pelicans, herons and plovers (among others) always emerged from the goo after repeated rinses in the light blue magic waters.
When cats and dogs come in covered with motor oil (reference a recent Veterinary Information Network discussion if you’re a subscriber), we always manage to get the oilies off with Dawn alone.
Then there’s the anal gland messiness and the skunk-sprayed dog to consider: Both extreme odors respond to freshly mixed baking soda mixed with hydrogen peroxide (1/3 cup to a quart, respectively), but the formula doesn’t really do it’s job without a dash of Dawn to break down the sebaceous, stick-to-the-fur components these materials are made of.
Dawn dishwashing detergent. Nothing else works half as well. And I have no idea why. Gotta say that with that endorsement, why would I use anything else in my own home?
PS: No, I have not been paid by Procter & Gamble (its manufacturers, I think). Though I would happily accept some remuneration if they cared to send it now that I’ve already waxed poetic on their product and divulged the extent of my financial ties (as all bloggers are now required to do).

I don't disagree.. I's extrememly weird.. I keep it in a bottle mixed with Tide.. and water.. Instead of pretreatment stuff.. I use the mixture, and toss in the washer.. I don't know what it is with the Dawn..

Whatever it is causes me a rash but it's worth the rash sometimes :)
Wish I'd known about this a decade ago. My youngest cat, in Insanicat mode, took a flying leap and snatched a sticky dangling fly strip off the ceiling and wrapped himself in it. The "antidote" to that sticky is oil. I opted for peanut butter so I wouldn't have to run to the store (we'd just moved and I hadn't stocked the shelves yet, hence the sticky fly strip to start with since we had the doors perpetually open while moving). Poor Pooky spent the next week getting the last of the peanut butter out of his long hair!

Also works well for getting sap off horses who insist on rubbing against pine trees.
And if you've picked up a flea-ful critter, it *seems* to remove/kill more of them in a bath than anything else I've used.

Totally not animal-related, but fifteen years ago, when I needed to mix up a wading pool of bubble solution for a children's program, Dawn was the recommended dishwashing liquid to use (along with a small amount of glycerin).
We pick up whatever's cheapest to wash our dishes, but I'm going to have to keep a small amount of Dawn handy for household uses!

We use Dawn as the default "shampoo" for dogs at our clinic. It will also kill fleas if left on for a few minutes. Just make sure to rinse well at the end since some animals (including my own dog) start itching if too much is left on their skin.
"Mythbusters", my son's favorite TV show tested several Skunk odor remedies and the one you suggested (Peroxyde, Baking Soda and Dawn) beat out the competition.
I also use Dawn as a prewash/laundry booster since another mom shared her secret to getting grass stains out of boy's white baseball pants

Dawn has always been the "prewash" shampoo of choice for de-greasing the coats of Longhaired show cats. We used to smear them in "Goop" then wash it all of with Dawn, followed by the cat shampoo of choice (depending on color of cat). Then blow them dry and voila! Flat greasy coat has become luminous, light and fluffy!
I'm not sure about using Goop anymore, but Dawn is always in my show arsenal.

I can't use Dawn in my own home anymore because the smell brings back visceral memories of stinking, sticky birds covered in motor oil. Similarly, Ivory was the dish soap used by our Therio department, so I can't use it without thinking of certain bits of equine anatomy. My fiance has to follow very specific instructions when shopping for dish detergent!

I have found Ajax diswashing liquid to perform equal to the original Dawn, and better than the current concentrated "ultra" Dawn products. I haven't yet tried it on my dog, though. I'ts also about half the price of Dawn.
