VIRTUAL VET HOSPITAL

Bebe was turned into the vet to be put to sleep.  The vet (without testing) diagnosed her with IBD.  I have her on Hill's Science Diet ZD and Metronidayile.  She still has frequent stools some of them with blood and loose.  I think she has EPI and would like to know how to treat that.

Disclaimer: not a vet, so the rest of this post is just conjecture.

My dog had bloody vomit and stools for a long time as we tried to figure out what her problem was...finally landed on food allergies. The ZD did not work for her, but the ID worked great. She was on metronidazole for a while, but it's an antibiotic, I believe, so it wasn't ideal long term. We've used sucralfate the last few times she's had an occasional flare-up, and it's worked great.

So I'm not recommending these, just saying, perhaps it's something to discuss with your vet. Not sure how he could diagnose without testing, but with IBD, not sure what you'd test, really. Good luck!

Some bloody loose stools = euthanasia? A vet can't test w/out your consent - if you want to get to the bottom of this, dig deep into those pockets and request bloodwork, radiographs, ultrasound, fexal exams, etc. If you for whatever reason think she has EPI, well, there's a test for that, too. If you're serious about getting a diagnosis, get your vet on board or find one who's willing to work w/you. If you're self-diagnosing EPI and want to treat it, use the same resources you found for diagnosing for help on how to treat it...at your pet's risk.

Obviously, fexal = fecal...just keeping y'all on your toes!

Must-find-diagnosis-first. Bloodwork, fecal, X-rays, ultrasound, GI function testing, colonoscopy (if needed). An internist is best but your garden variety vet will do if he/she's thorough (and has all the cool tools). EPI can be diagnosed by a blood test. IBD is ideally diagnosed with a colonoscopy and biopsy. Hope tht helps!

I just want you to know that I did not turn her in to be destroyed, a breeder did. Someone who I knew called me as they knew I had a Frenchie already and was looking for another Frenchie friend. I will be scheduling her for a blood test and a fecal exam but of course money is an issue when you go on beyond those tests. She does not seem to be gaining or loosing weight at this time and can't wait to be fed. Vomiting has never been an issue with this dog, unlike my other French Bulldog. Love her to death and so want to get her fixed but cannot spend a million dollars on her either

Frenchies are the wrong breed to own if you don't have deep pockets. You may want to start a savings account for your dogs, as they are little health disasters and you will absolutely, definitely need an emergency fund at least once in their lives.

Try the I/D and see what happens. Z/D is good for allergies but if she's not allergic to her food it's not doing a lot of good. A fecal would rule out parasites or coccidia. Maybe a spoonful of canned pure pumpkin would add some bulk to her stools. I'm not a vet so I don't know.

Good luck.
