VIRTUAL VET HOSPITAL

My 9 year old female spayed dog started showing signs of skin problems. She has chewed herself raw in several spots and has general hair loss in her back. She also has weird circular purple spots that I noticed show up before the hair starts to fall out in those areas.

The first spot that showed up was along her right rib and looked almost like a purple bruise and the long muscles is swollen there. I also found a swollen lymph node under her right arm pit. I have taken her to her Vet.

She is taking Cephalaxin500mg 2xs a day, 3vcaps-2 caps-2xs a day, Aurocin ear cleaner once a day, Otomax ointment applied 2xs a day to infected ears, Genisis Topical spray 2xs a day to her coat, a medicated shampoo 2xs a week. She was also givin a shot of cortisone/steroid and an allergy shot and her rabies vaccine. She also started Frontline Plus for fleas.

He also gave her Hills Ultra Z/D Food and stopped her regular diet. He told me he didn't feel the lymph node lump but I can see it when she lays down and rolls around on her back and stretches. We have a return visit in the morning for a follow up/eval.

Problem: She has never wet on my floor before. 3 days ago she started leaking when she lays down. And on this Hills diet she begs for food and acts hungry all the time with a big increase in water intake.

I feel like my vet didn't listen to me....

Any help Please???

You don't say how long ago your dog was treated. But the steroid she was given certainly could cause the increased appetite, increase in drinking and her leaking. Make sure you do not restrict her water intake though, as it is important that she has free access to water so she can stay well hydrated with her increased output.

We started treatment 10 days ago. The itching has totally stopped.

Well if the itching has stopped I guess you were not taken for a ride :)
Maybe the increased drinking and leaking are totally unrelated, could be a UTI. When you go back to have her checked you should speak to your vet about it.

Not a UTI, by the sounds of it. Just side effects of the steroids. It will increase appetite and thirst a lot. It can take up to several weeks to wear off.

More serious is the issue of feeling your vet is not listening to you. You need to address that issue with your vet. Not all vets have a great bedside manner! But if you confront them in a nice way, most will listen to you, and answer your questions.

Lori, The only "pickle" I see is that you won't be sure if your dog has :flea allergy, food allergy, or something else. You got soup to nuts for treatment and your girl should be in fine shape soon.

I second some of the other comments - your vet's prescribed treatment sounds similar to how the vets I work for work-up skin cases, although we sometimes do skin scrapings/fungal cultures/skin impressions to rule out mites, ringworm, or yeast infections of the skin. If her response was almost immediate, I'd be inclined to believe it was the steroid injection, which will suppress an immune system going haywire from allergens almost from the get-go, and does increase water intake/urine output and have an effect on the appetite. It's a "throw the book at it" method of treatment - steroids, fatty acid supplements, topical spray/shampoo, antibiotics, flea control, and a low allergen food to address the most likely causes. I definitely don't think you were taken for a ride, although it can feel that way if your vet didn't take the time to really talk to you about why he/she was doing all those things, and even more so if it was costly. So, hope that makes you feel better, and it seems your pet certainly is feeling better.

I second the notion that at issue here is that you did not feel at ease with the experience. I'm sure you paid quite a bit for this care and you deserve to understand the whys and hows and what-ifs.

After hearing your side we're well-disposed to sympathize. After all, we've all been to vets, dentists, physicians, accountants and lawyers whose instructions left us cold. "What did that mean?" "Can I trust this?"

But it's true that we all need to take some responsibility for asking questions and getting what we deserve when we seek services of any kind.

To that end, I recommend you either find a vet who can communicate better with you or I advise you to prepare a list of questions in advance. Be assertive--remind yourself you're looking out for your pet and you deserve explanations.

One more thing: Never let anyone give you or your loved one a vaccine when you/your loved one does not feel well. A sick visit is not the time to administer a rabies shot.

Thanks to all who have tried ti help. We went for our follow up and he checked her ears and skin, I mentioned I had started her on a new diet and he said he would see us next year!
I will be seeing a new vet recommended by a dear friend and pet rescuer and I will be very firm in the future. I don't know yet what caused this. Allergies or not. But as soon as I find out I will post.
She is itch free and not dribbling urine any more and seems to be very happy.
Thank you all again.

Real good point about the rabies vaccine during a time of hay-wire immune system (allergies)
