The warehousing of horses taken off the range is clealry not sustainable as an approach to managing their numbers. I personally do think the numbers need to be managed down to some level below literal capacity for a lot of reasons, not just that they stress native ecosystems but also the natural controls in the absence of predation tend to be fairly horrific. It seems to me that contraception research is so close to being practical but the hope of getting the final push in funcding and staff hours is a fiant one.

My understanding is that the contraceptives are only effective for two years and that the horses must be caught first. That's quite a job. But we desperately need to find ways to do this. Unfortunately, the political will is apparently not there for this approach.

The term of effect is one issue, but the scheme I saw trial involved darting mares. not too arduous given that they were already being monitored by conservation workers, and not all the mares needed to be dosed, just about half of them. Unfortunately the trial failed because the product had overheated in shipping. But I feel if there was more of a will to develop these products a practiocal solution could be found that would satisfy most people. As it is we seem to be back to kill versus do nothing like the last decade didn't even happen....
